I have no idea who this player is but he performs with a contemporary folk/roots singer Jimmy LaFave.
These are stills from his YouTube video. At first I thought he was playing a lapsteel on a strap but closer look it's a full bodied guitar with knobs but no resonator.
Any ideas?

| That's Jeff Plankenhorn, a singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist who is, I believe, Austin based, and the guitar is one he designed. Details at his website. |

The structure seems unusual: no resonator, no round hole, pickups with knobs built inside the body. Of course there's no overhead shot but I guess it just piques my curiosity of what are the merits of a raised string guitar like this?

Without knowing all the details, their description of it being a neck through design tells me there is one solid piece of wood from headstock to tail. My best guess is that the sides are hollow to conserve weight and that they used a reso body style / shape simply for ease of stand up playing without a standoff. Or to say, its simply a narrow body lap steel core with reso shaped wings attached.

| I met Plank (as he calls himself) at the Edmonton Folk Festival a couple of years ago. He showed me his axe and explained some things about it, the details of which I can't reliably recall. I then heard him play with Joe Ely and his sound was great as was everything about his playing. Nice guy and a terrific musician. |
