It's something you learn with practice and experience, Craig. It isn't as hard as it sounds.

Most pedal steels have the pretty close to the same knee levers - only the position of them is different. I've never encountered another E9 with four levers that are "completely different" from mine. Usually 2 or 3 of them have the same changes. It's not hard to adjust to different physical positions as long as the changes are the same.
