On the net there is a page called the Banjo Hangout they have 95,325 active members. So I checked out how we are doing in comparison to other instruments.
Banjo Hangout 95,325
Steel Forum 15,820 not all are active
Fiddle Hangout 15,617
Dobro Hangout 8,513
Guitar Hangout 7,606
Mandolin Hangout 5,220
We are right in the thick of it considering so many people have a guitar etc in a closet just laying around.
They all have an area called "Sounding Off" where they can add MP3 files of their playing. BOB are you out there or have I missed something on the forum? _________________ '70 D10 Black fatback Emmons PP, Hilton VP, BJS bars, Boss GE-7 for Dobro effect, Zoom MS50G, Stereo Steel amp, Telonics 15” speaker.

My favorite is the Theremin hangout, but not much activity. There are only three members.
The Mime hangout is interesting too, but it's pretty quiet there. |

I'll bet Mike, Bruce, Frank, Fred and all the manufacturers wished those 95,000 Banjo players played steel! _________________ Rittenberry Prestige SD-12,Mullen G2 SD-12 ,Mullen PRP S-12 BMI S-12 V8 octal, BJS Bars, LiveSteelStrings,Steelers Choice Seat. |

I'll bet if there was a distorted guitar hangout, it would be six figures. _________________ Henry Matthews

Probably the reason why the "guitar hangout" seems so small, despite the vast number of guitarists out there, is that there are probably hundreds of "guitar hangouts" with at least as many participants in each one... _________________ www.JimCohen.com

every time I read comments and jokes about the banjo, I remember people telling me they cant stand pedal steel guitar because it sounds like someone pulling a cat by the tail... to each his own I guess.... and another thing is, almost anywhere in world you go, if you pull the banjo out of the case people will recognize it...in the other hand, I played my last gig couple months ago in Murfreesboro, about 20 min south of Nashville, music city USA...and people asked me if I was playing a dulcimer... so there is your answer... as far as accordion goes, those little cajun accordions are toys for kids... you go on YouTube check out some of those Serbian pro accordion players and it will make your head spin... see how easy is to play what they are playing... _________________ www.steelguitarsonline.com |

It is interesting why most Steel players don't like the Banjo. I'm a Banjo player. I played Banjo for a living for years before I ever got into Steel. Bela Fleck said that being a hot Banjo player is like being a great kazoo player.
Banjo is a cool instrument and I love it, but I also like Banjo jokes. |

Why are there so many Martin guitars in Bluegrass bands? Because with a set of heavy gauge strings, they can compete in loudness with the banjo. Sorry for being off topic. _________________ Fender Kingman, Sierra Crown D-10, Evans Amplifier, Soup Cube. |

the instrument I always felt sorry for in bluegrass bands is dobro...that poor thing has no chance next to loud banjo, big Martin flat top, sqeeling fiddle or huge upright bass lol.... its like it has to fight for life in every song... I had the same problem playing a banjo in the country band, fighting drumms and electric guitars, poor thing would be squeeling, plinking, feedback all over, until I discovered a Deering Crossfire... lol...now that was a huge game change...you should see look on the drummers face when I stepped on that volume pedal lol...great banjo, perfect for a electric band situation... _________________ www.steelguitarsonline.com |

Yes and the way the Dobro is pointed, all of the sound goes up, where as the Banjo can be pointed right at someones face. And with the Banjo resonator deflecting all of the sound forward, a lot of times the Banjo player does not realize how loud he or she is, in an acoustic setting.
One reason Banjo hangout has more members, may be that there has been somewhat of a resurgence of interest in the Banjo. The movie "Oh Brother Whereart Thou" and the song "Man of Constant Sorrow" helped. Also as someone else mentioned, Steve Martin has popularized it lately too.
The Banjo is not an easy instrument, but it is easier to get started on than the Steel. So...lots more people learning the Banjo.
There is another thread on here that is encouraging though. About Steel players under 19...Several young people posted
Damir, I had a Crossfire for awhile..wish I had not sold it...am using a fishman rare earth set up. Not nearly as loud as the Crossfire but with some tweaking it is workable. |

I would think that the much-maligned banjo would be an excellent launch pad for steel guitar with its misplaced strings and rapid thumb.
Plus, it makes you want to switch instruments quickly, move on to the other misunderstood electric dulcimer/cheese slicer keyboard.

Everything about the banjo is off-topic around here.
Think I'll go over to the accordion hangout. |

I like the banjo, too - but I like banjo jokes even more. I enjoy the mystified expressions on the faces of non-musicians when we're going into our banjo-joke routine - "Why don't you like banjos - what's wrong with them?" "Snare-on-a-stick? Nothing, I suppose...."
It's hard to explain but it's somehow just a part of life now (the jokes, I mean). Of course, one can always substitute 'accordion' - depends where you are. _________________ Roger Rettig: Emmons D10, B-bender Teles, Martins, and a Gibson Super 400!
