whats some good lessons for lap steel c6 for beginner?

Just starting out, in fact I just ordered my first lap steel. I want to use c6 tuning. who has lessons for someone brand new. I mean from the very beginning. I play guitar,Bass,violin, but first try on the steel and I want to get the basics right. I cant read music and have no desire to. I want to Learn by ear. but need the basics. Thanks.

Doug Beaumier's books or Andy Volk new one or other's are a good way to state. Watch Doug's videos on you tube. I play by ear and just watch which frets the bar is on. His version of "Now or Never" I worked out in a short time. Good luck and come here tons of in just do a search on each question you have.

What do you think of the GeorgeBoards dvd course. comes with 12 DVD,s for like $50 bucks or so. is this good for a total beginner.

I played bass extensively and guitar just-for-fun before moving to steel. I started on Scotty's C6 method which, although may sound dated and twee by today's taste, it covers everything you need to know and will use in the future. After that I went to Cindy Cashdollar's DVD's which I found to be excellent even if Western Swing is not you taste and I still go back to every now and again. All of this is C6 focused and can be used on 6 or 8 strings.

Watching Troy Brenningmeyer's YouTube teasers alone will bring you further - I wished I'd found them way-back-when! Many members of this forum have helped me extensively but to live in house you have to have a foundation and that is where Scotty and Ms. Cashdollar help!

6 or 8 string? 8 string, Cindy Cashdollar has a fantastic instructional dvd set. Even if you're not pursuing western swing style, the techniques & info are invaluable.

I cannot speak to the box-set but I remember when I first started that I watched a couple of video postings from GeorgeBoards, maybe on Youtube (I can't recall) and I found the pace just too slow. I think this is the challenge when starting steel coming from a strong musical background, particularly from the guitar-family of instruments.

Troy has some material on playing country lines on C6 lap steel, you'll find his teaser on Youtube and it's very good.

I've got some great country lines from Greg Cutshaw's site: This link is just for the C6 material http://www.gregcutshaw.com/Tab/LapTab.html but Greg is one of those wonderful people that writes everything down and shares so his whole site is packed with useful information. The C6 stuff not video but it is clearly tabbed and supported with audio. He uses C6 and the derivative C6/A7 tunining which I occasionally use on country numbers - its just one string tuned up a half tone so not a lot of change to worry about.

In terms of clear instructional design, it's hard to beat Troy's excellent materials. I would say that my C6th book would be most helpful to a player who spends some time on fundamentals first or perhaps in tandem with instruction like Troy's.

Joe Wright has a great Non-Pedal C6 DVD. It is two-disc set with 12 half-hour lessons. Although he teaches on an 8-string, most of the stuff naturally falls within the middle six strings. So, it should be quite helpful regardless.
