I'm wondering what is the "best" way to orient the racks on a Sho Bud Pro with racks and barrels.
Should the open channel of each rack face towards or away from the changer? Towards the changer means tuning barrels will contact the top and bottom edge of each rack.
How will this choice affect tuning adjustment behavior? |

| I believe the standard is to have the open end face the changer. But I recall an old thread where someone argued that the open end should face the key head end, and that the "standard" configuration was a mistake made at the factory that stuck for some reason. |

My '72 Pro, bought new back then, had the open side facing the changer.

Michael Yahl posted that advice a few days ago, his reasoning was that the open side provides a more positive stop point for the protruding spring tip on the barrel. |

I always assumed that part of the whole setup was so the tip coming out of the barrel would stop against the lip on either side of the rack...

My '67 S-10, bought very used in about '84 had the open sides towards the keyhead. So I've had them both ways, and there was abdo-lutely no discernible difference.

Yes, Ian. That's what got me thinking about it.
My S10 is setup with open side towards the keyhead. Very short wire sticking out of some older barrels is causing problems. Might work better against the better defined edges of the open side. |

Just got off the phone with James. He said either way can work, but recommends open side towards the tuning barrels, for the same reasons already mentioned. He "took me to school" on the care and feeding of brass tuning barrels. I have a few I need to rehabilitate. Got some work to do, then will share the outcome you all.
