Set em Up Joe

I have recently learned the intro (Thanks Mickey!) to Set em up Joe. Can anyone explain what is going on when the steel comes in between the verse and the chorus? I am brand new to pedal steel and appreciate all the help.

Sounds like 5th fret, strings 3B and 4, strike 6B, then 4 and 5, release A and lower 4 as you slide down to 3.

Big Jim Vest played the intro on that record. He says he detuned his 10th string B to somewhere about F#, then when he used the 1st pedal, he tuned the resultant raise to an accurate A....an octave lower than his 6th string with pedal #2 down. That's how he gets that "long" pull. You use the A6th side of the E9th tuning....that is, pedals down....to play the whole intro and the turnaround in the middle of the song. There's a YouTube video showing him demonstrating the intro and how he de-tuned the string.

Paul, the question was what was he playing for the fill between verse and chorus.
The Mickey Adams video shows the intro pretty well

I never have been able to 100% duplicate that, but I come real close pedals down, then get funky with the 1st pedal and the bar after doing a "Mooney" 3 frets up.

Hey John, Thanks for that link!! I've seen a few of those Jim Vest videos, but not that one. They are treasures of PSG history. I see that one was #8. I guess I'd better go back and visit the ones I missed. Thanks again.

Yea, those discussions really are treasures. I went to Jim Vests website Hopi g that maybe he was selling them on DVD, hoping for better quality video. It appears that Jim does sell the video, but only in VHS format. Know anyone who knows how to transpose VHS to DVD?

If you are referring to the very short passage going into the chorus, try at the 8th fret strings 1-5 then 1-5 rocking on the a pedal 1-5a off the a pedal down to the fifth fret strings 3-4 then rocking on the a pedal again
