I just found out that long time steel guitarist Bill Davis has passed away.
Bill was a smooth sound and a hell of an innovator as far as his equipment was concerned. I once played a job with him where he had mounted a 15" BW inside a car tire. He rolled his speaker to the stage, plugged it in and played... and you know... it sounded pretty darned good. He always drove Cadillacs... the big ones... and kept his steel assembled and laying on its side in the trunk... secured by some kind of skid stops he'd made. All he did when he came to a job was open the trunk, grab his steel, carry it in, put it on stage, and yeah... sometimes roll his speaker inside... although to be honest, he knew that wasn't the best sound, and most of the time, he used conventional speaker cabinets.
Aside from his innovations, he was a great steeler... I first heard him way back in the 80s playing in some club in Huntsville, Alabama. When I started playing steel, he invited me over to his house and helped me get my steel set up and adjusted. All in all, he was a very good fella. He always had a good joke to tell, and was a pleasure to know.
I believe he was 82 when he passed away.
