In order to keep the side nylon tuners in the same relative position when changing strings (so you dont have a few oddball ones sticking out about a half inch more than the others)....should you "overloosen" the old set of strings before removing them, anticipating the stretch of the new strings? I would imagine if you didn't do this thread on the nylon tuners would eventually "bottom out" after several string changes.

Thanks
K

I never loosen the pedal or knee nylon nuts when changing strings. If you use the same string gauges, you may not need to tune the pedal and knees at all.

I may, in fact, be nuts. However, I am screwed onto the right bolt... Jesus!

Kristen, what you suggest is not a bad idea at all. It isn't totally necessary but can help to prevent a problem that can develop over time. It kind of depends on how often you change your strings. If you tend to keep them on for months at a time and have had to adjust the tuning nuts several times you may well eventually create a problem. Back each nylon nut off a couple of turns and then re-string and adjust.

No....Also never cut a string under tension when changing strings, check, and lube roller bridge, and changer, check changer for grooves, and scratches, and polish.

No, loosening isn't required. Also, as Bill said, cutting the strings under tension increases the chances of injury to the player, or anyone nearby. (It won't hurt a pedal steel, though.)

Doug makes some good points as I'm sure he's seen the effects of poor maintenance.

One of the positive things about loosening the pedal tuning nuts before installing new strings is that you can eliminate the problems encountered by overtuning them if there have been previous issues with the old strings. Surely everyone has seen the odd things that old flattened and stretched out strings can do.

In all my years of playing, I've never done that. Might have to tweak the tuners a lit bit until the strings set in, but, no, I've never done that. I don't think it needs to be done.
