I have noticed that some pedal steels have black felt or flocking underneath the undercarriage. Does this have any purpose other than to look nice? |

It's supposed to dampen and reduce the noise of clanking pedals, rods, etc. too. |

In New York they passed the HowardR steel protection laws for undercarriage mental health.

Let me clarify my somewhat confusing post. What I meant was if I invert my guitar with the legs in the air and remove the front apron and the back skirt, running down the muiddle is a strip of black felt about 4" wide. I was wondering if this had a purpose. That's all! |

I'm sure it helps a wee bit to quiet down the mechanical noises, but most guitars don't really need it. It's mostly decorative, to give you a good feeling when you open the case.
On my Sierra it's red, not black. My Williams doesn't have any felt.

I haven't seen a guitar with just a strip of felt down the middle. What kind of guitar is it? I always assumed the felt was an easy way to cover up extra screw holes and bad looking wood. |

A new Sho-bud back in 1983 came with "strips of foam rubber" threaded among the rods to dampen the noise.

Gene my '83 has them too.
Seems a good idea if they don't rub too much. |
