I have noticed that some pedal steels have black felt or flocking underneath the undercarriage. Does this have any purpose other than to look nice?

It's supposed to dampen and reduce the noise of clanking pedals, rods, etc. too.

In New York they passed the HowardR steel protection laws for undercarriage mental health.

Oy! Don't touch under there, or I give you a slap. You listen now!!!

Let me clarify my somewhat confusing post. What I meant was if I invert my guitar with the legs in the air and remove the front apron and the back skirt, running down the muiddle is a strip of black felt about 4" wide. I was wondering if this had a purpose. That's all!

I'm sure it helps a wee bit to quiet down the mechanical noises, but most guitars don't really need it. It's mostly decorative, to give you a good feeling when you open the case.

On my Sierra it's red, not black. My Williams doesn't have any felt.

I haven't seen a guitar with just a strip of felt down the middle. What kind of guitar is it? I always assumed the felt was an easy way to cover up extra screw holes and bad looking wood.

A new Sho-bud back in 1983 came with "strips of foam rubber" threaded among the rods to dampen the noise.

Gene my '83 has them too.
Seems a good idea if they don't rub too much.
