It is Randy Beavers, but he is not playing a Mullen, its a Zum Encore built especially for him.

Great playing, very musical. Randy's Encore has excellent sustain and clarity on two note lines. Anyone know what is different about that guitar from the standard Encore? Pickup?

I remember reading about that guitar. If I remember correctly it is a Stage 1 body with a Zum Hybrid changer and parts. i think it was custom made for Randy and it is the only one. Thee was something here on the forum about it. I'm sure if Randy sees this he will fill you in.

Hi Bill, this guitar is not a Stage One, or what what the new model will be. The only thing about it that is the same is the endplates, so it's the same size width and length. Basically this guitar has all Zumsteel parts, like cross shafts, bellcranks, Hybrid changer, neck, keyhead, etc, but on a Stage One body.
It's a pure pleasure to play! It resonates like no other guitar I've ever played. I've heard some folks refer to their old single neck Emmons PP this way. Acoustically, it's much louder as well. Could this be from the smaller body? Maybe... It weighs 22 pounds out of the case, and in a Bently fiber case, 32 1/2.
I've had this guitar 5 months or so, and since then it's the only guitar I've played on a job. I've recently had a major surgery, so it's the only one I dare to pick up as well.
This model is not available in the Zumsteel catalog, but was built as a favor from a long time friend. Here is a low res pic from my phone at a rehearsal.

| This is perfect. I needed a great example of what I should be playing. I do this song with a young girl singer. I've been playing something I'm satisfied with, but what Randy plays is ten times better. Now I have something to try to copy. They say that to try to copy another's playing, is a form of flattery. Yep, that's "Pee-Wee" the little custom Zum through a "Bill M" modded Fender Blues Jr. amp.
My style of playing there is my "tip of the hat" to Hal Rugg. In my opinion when it comes to a medium shuffle, nobody played them better than Hal. All those "signature licks" of his just seem to fit in those pockets. Sure miss him! |

Randy do you remember what Mods Bill M did to your amp. I've been following his site for years and thinking about getting a Blues JR to tinker with. I was going to use it for guitar, but dang if it don't sound good with steel. Do you have the stock speaker in the amp? |

Bob, Bill M did about everything that was offered at the time, basic tone stack, presence control, reverb circuit, line out, changed out both transformers and tube sockets bringing the power up to 30 watts RMS with two 6L6 tubes. The speaker is an Eminence "Cannibus Rex".
All I had in mind when I started the amp project was for rehearsals and very quiet gigs. It's much more than that now! I've worked some large venues with it where it was mic'ed, and sessions. It's the perfect amp for home practice. I've also had several guitar players fall in love with it. |

Randy, Thanks for the information on the amp. That's about eveything Bill offers, it's a great sounding little amps. Bill has had some serious health problems so I'm not sure how much amp work he's doing these days. Bill say's the Blues JR is a good little amp waiting for a great amp to come out. Even with the mods it's still thousands of dollars less than a custom made tube amp. |
