What are the "cool" fender single neck pedal steels?
Also, do they normally go in the $500-$800 range (depending on shape)?
Were there any to avoid?

I recently got a Fender 400 S8 4x0.

I really like this one, and am now looking for the D8 version of the same steel, a Fender 1000.

Mine looks like the one pictured here: http://www.telapex.com/~cejjrpe/f400ped.htm

The 400 was their single-neck 8 string model (standard w/4 pedals), and the 800 was their single-neck 10 string model. The early 8 string models ('58-'62) had a solid-rod bridge and nut, so they didn't tune as well, and the strings broke more often. All the 10 string models came with the roller nut and cam bridge, as did the 8 string models made after 1963. (Sunburst finish was standard after '63 on all of 'em.)

The older ones are the most pricey, bringing about $400-$900, while the newer models bring about $400-$800, with condition and number of pedals determining the price of both.

What was the normal tuning/pedal configuration on the 8 string model?
Were they reliable guitars?
I was looking at a 1000 with 6 pedals.

There's a fender 1000 with 6 pedals (one pedal rod missing) and 4 added knee levers currently listed on ebay. It might go cheap. It was listed for a miminum $499.00 bid and got no bites. It was re-listed and now has the minimum bid of $399.00. Shipping is cheap. If I had the bucks to spare, I'd bid on it. It's missing the bridge/changer covers, but I think it's the later bridge/changer system. It appears to have a roller nut.
Check it out.

Sneaky Pete has made a few bucks playing an old fender (with quite a few modifications). I think his has 27 pedals, a dozen or so knee levers, built-in equalizer, cell phone, GPS, cruise control and........8 strings!
