Quilter Tone Block question

If you hookup an XLR to 1/4 inch mono speaker cable from the direct out of the tone block straight into an un-powered speaker should you hear anything?

If I go out the back with a 1/4 inch cable it works fine.

It states the direct out is to hookup direct to the board and that is my intention in conjunction with the speaker from the speaker hookup on the back of the unit.

Still, one would think the direct out to the speaker would also work.

The Direct out probably wasn't designed to "power" or drive a speaker. It is usually to send signal to a mixer. A powered speaker could work too.
