Are there any albums/cd's/releases that Willie features steel on?
I know Jimmy Day played with him off & on, and a few others, but I can't really recall any "heavy steel" music that Willie has recorded.
I know that Buddy & Willie were good friends - any recordings of them together?

Too bad the performance was so flawed by Willie
being so far ahead of the backing band (and, no,
it wasn't due to Willies playfulness with meter).
Looks like Scheafer was aware of it early-on.

Yeah, that was pretty bad. I think we've all played with performers that rushed time or see-sawed badly, and this one is a good example of that. I wonder what the issue was - maybe Willie's monitors weren't turned up to where he could hear the band well? The bass line punctuated the time well enough that he should have been able to follow without a problem...

Not sure what "heavy steel" music is, but....
It's always seemed to me Willie's most significant use of steel guitar was in the so-called "demo" recordings he made for Pamper Music in the early 60s. Very sparse instrumentation with Jimmy Day to the front on most of them. These demos feature a number of titles Willie didn't often sing or record later in his career.
They weren't released until the 1980s when they leaked out on a bunch of budget label LPs in a disorganized and uncoordinated mess, with no liner notes or documentation.
Some of them have since been on CD, but I don't think there has yet been an authoritative collection that tries to release all of them at one time. I'd like to see it done.
Here's a complete or near complete list of the titles. If you see a CD with a bunch of these titles, it's a pretty good chance it's the demo versions with Jimmy.

I just can't listen to Willie for more than a few measures (my measures, not his!!!) It's just too disconcerting and detracts from whatever song is getting the Nelson treatment.

Well, songs/albums that Willie released that feature a prominent amount of steel guitar, kind of like what comes to mind with John Hughey/Vince Gill albums... 'nuff said! 
I had a chance to listen to 'phases and stages' - very little featured steel on that one, sadly. I thing there was a C neck song where John got to stretch his legs a little.
I will check out the other - thanks so much for all of the suggestions so far.

I guess I have a different version of phases and stages. There is some beautiful steel playing in there... I guess it's not tons of steel but what is played is heavy in a better sense😉
Jimmy Day on shotgun willie is some of my favorite playing period. |

Willie recorded an lp in 1968 at RCA with Jimmy Day on steel tentatively called "Good Ole' Country Singin'". The album never got past the planning stages for release but was finally released on cd in 2000, under that title.
Only 2 songs where Jimmy shines - Tender Years and I Don't Feel Anything. Something To Think About has steel but not as pronounced as the afore mentioned songs.

Willie was in a hurry to get out of there!
I think Willie was very avware of Scheafer's totally out of place intro followed by more of Scheafer's (I don't have a clue what to do so I'll throw in some (Do wah diddy diddy, dum diddy do)through the song.
I could read it in Willie's face. Get me the .... out of here. |

| I didn't see anything wrong with the intro, it was about as "Sears & Roebuck" as you could ask for. What followed was either the most artfully-stylized version of that song, or the biggest train-wreck you're ever likely to hear...depending on your point of view. |
