McKinney Mauna Kea Acoustic Lap Steel

I found this little beauty at a yard sale. It was busted up pretty good, but everything was there. Just a bit of glue and it's as good as new. Neck was shaved down, but you can see that it used to look like. Any comments?

Nice decals. Can't tell who made it, but there are some Oahus that have the same body shape, and using different graphic decals.

Jackson Browne loved it...

But didn't want to spend anything one it. I don't mind keeping it at all.

Danny Ferrington loved it...

The occasion was Danny's cover story in the Fretboard Journal. I was just picking up the guitar at Old Style in Silver Lake.

I wonder what it was like to play it on your lap with a square neck?

I'm torn; that headstock style is very Regal-esque, but the body shape and checkered binding really look like Kay. I'm leaning toward Kay (probably still Stromberg-Voisinet when this guitar was built).

Body size and shape, binding, bridge common to Kays of the period, most likely mid- to late-30s. I have a couple of squarenecks from then, including a Deluxe, and have played others. They sound wonderful.
