Hi team.
Well, Winter is around the corner, and I feel a project coming on! I've attached pics of my much-loved Recording King Lap Steel, fitted with two Deusenberg Multibender levers. This is a grest instrument to play, giving me the simplicity (?)of a lap steel with the bonus of some cool PSG sounds here and there. (For those not familiar with the 'Bender, one lever raises the second string a full tone, the other raises the third string a semi-tone. Each lever has it's own pre-set stops.
I have always found the levers a little awkward to use, as pressing them with the palm means restricting free movement of the right hand when picking.
So, how about fitting two knee levers, each lever would pull down a 'Bender lever? No need for 'stops' as they're already there. Just two holes through the body, and two rod or cable assemblies mounted underneath. They'd have to be mounted mid-way to suit my sitting position. Simple as that.....unless you say different? Ideas, suggestions, even quotations for two made-up levers....all welcome. I'm not without mechanical skills, so let's get this project started!
PS: I slipped in a pic of my roller nut btw....

Man I wish some of you guys were in the uk on the other side of the pond. Construction wise in the US you are always breaking new ground for our beloved instrument. I love that.
Keep it up. _________________ Stefan

Just noticed.
How much did the legs setup cost? I need to get some on mine. _________________ Stefan

Where there's a will etc.....I couldn't source a leg set anywhere, so I bought a s/h Rogue Lap Steel complete with legs. Then I removed the leg 'sockets' and fitted them to my RK (got one hole position slightly wrong, hence black 'cover-disc' in pic btw).
Then I filled the holes in the Rogue, put a nice piece of felt over the under-side, and sold it as a lap steel without legs, for about 20 euro less. Hence, a set of legs on my RK for 20 euro. So that's YOUR next project.
Now, let's get back to MINE!!! |

How about a couple of knee "lifts". Sideways knees are going to move it around a lot and if you could figure hoe t mount the Bigsby underneath. That might work... |

I thought about doing that years ago on a lap steel I built. My lap steel has a cavity under the neck extending all the way to the bridge. I could hide the linkages in there anyway. The levers would fold down out of the back of the guitar, not unlike a PSG.
One point I thought of - you would need to dedicate one knee to secure the lap steel to, say the right knee. This could be done with a strap or dummy levers on both sides. In this manner when you actuated a change with your left knee you would have something to push against. Without this the guitar would move. |
