Howdy... I picked up my first steel a lil while back... its a '74 MSA D-10... It has an 8 floor 2 knee(right knee) set-up... Evidently this was an option(I found an old MSA Owners Manual that showed an 8&2 option) Here is my question... I found a great teacher in Larry Behm up in Portland Or. ... My plan is to purchase a couple more knee levers and put this guitar into a Standard Emmons Set Up... However... I was curious as to what the previous owners set up was...???... I researched the copedent and found that the C6 neck had the Jimmy Day C6 set up

Is there anyone out there that uses this set up... that may have some insight as to why I may want to keep it...???... after making this discovery I have looked into Jimmy Day's work and it is Amazing !!! After reading about his life I am ashamed to say that we are probably a little too much alike... anyhow... If anyone has any information about this configuration I would greatly appreciate it... if not I have a guru to look up to for many years in Larry... He is a master of both necks ...He has shaved years off my learning curve... Thanks

That is the original standard C6 setup with G on top. Next one down is the next generation Emmons setup with D on top and a couple of extra levers which are now thought of as standard.

Boy...It looks so easy when somebody finally sorts it out for you...!!!... Thanks... Well I'm coming at this pedal steel from the non pedal steel world... this business with not every string ascending higher in pitch has thrown me for a loop i guess... I play a lot of Dobro so Im pretty comfortable with a D on top... but having an E on the 2nd string sorta Bucks my instincts... but the more i play the more I like it... I might just have to break from the pack a little bit and go with the Emmons C6 set up and add the levers... but just leave the G up top... Thanks for helping me sort this out... I appreciate it

Michael, if you add levers to raise either 3 or 3 and 7, combine that with P5 and you'll have the high G from strings 2-10 at the third fret.
If you're new to the C6th neck, here's some basic chord forms (I'm not gonna give string selection, you can find them)
Open: C, C6,Am/Am7,Fmaj7
P4 (keep it if you like western swing and jazz) Cmaj7, G
P5: D, D9
P6: F7
P7 Cmaj9,G
P8: A7
5&6: F#dim7
5&7: D13
6&7: F13

Thank You... That is so cool... I am just eaten up by this world of new technique and sounds... The E9 is just so amazing and new ... But honestly as a Listener I just love to hear what I consider to be the heart or old sounds of the C6... the endless swinging jazzy chords... My God its so wonderful...!!!... I'm itching to dig those sounds out of this guitar... I got an old 57 Fender 8 string which i wanted to get down on some of the classic tunings... but as fate would have it I ended up getting work with a Space Rock band and so I set it up with bigger string to extend my range downwards... its an amazing instrument but I havent had a chance to really dig into the Western Swing as I had planned... But the Pedal Steel community is so supportive... everyone i meet will just give you the shirt off their back kind of people... Thank You for those pedal/chord lists... that just gets the boat in the water for me... its intimidating... but its coming along...

There's another thread about the first string....


Keeping the G on top with P5 raising it a half step is an important consideration if the older recordings of C6 is what caught your attention.

The G Dobro tuning has the 5th as D on top. The G serves the same function. G-B-D = C-E-G.

Jimmy Day's C6th was the same as the back neck of the Sho-Bud Crossover, if you eliminate the 5th pedal:
