One of my favorites, aesthetically speaking anyway, is the Sho-Bud Super Pro II. The End plates on those were really cool, they sort of reminded me of aluminum valve covers. Seems like they also had the shobud logo etched into the tops of the pickups.
Of course my all time favorite steel will always be the Original Emmons, but I've still got a soft spot for the old 'Buds |

Original Emmons' P/P. Most beautiful PSG I have ever seen; or since.
Sound to die for.
Mechanics to die over.

Fulawka, Mullen, ZB, Fessy and the new Millenium are also up there. Individally, I thingk Dave Van Allen's Zum, Chuck Lettes' Mullen and Ricky Davis's former Fulawka Blue Darlin' are among the prettiest steel guitars I've ever seen.
If Ricky's Fulawka was an S-12 insead of a D-10 I'd have bought it just cause it is so beautiful.
The UGLIEST steel (IMHO) was the Whitney. I know they are suposed to be wonderful, but Yeech! If I was forced to play one, I'd put a paper bag over it so I and the audience wouldn't have to look at it. |

Sho~Bud Pro I, ProII, and Pro III's. Next it would be the Marlens that I've seen on the Forum recently. Also, I always thought Rusler and Clark's were good looking steels. ZB's, especialy Kevin Hatton's! In recent years I have seen some of the newer steels that were really sharp with the mixing of different colored formicas. A lacquer finished guitar is hard to beat appearence-wise.

Don't forget the underside of the steel.
I believe that the aesthetic appeal of the underside of a ZB cannot be surpassed.

I'd have to nominate Jerry Fleming's Marlen shown in Ricky Davis' "House of Wood" as one of the most eye appealing guitars. As for picking out the most appealing, I can't, there are just too many pretty ones out there. |

In looking at my ShoBud LDG, the thing I see that makes it so attractive is a combination of the wood grain, the stain color, the clear high gloss lacquer and the inlay work on the apron. Even the ShoBud LOGO done up in an a nich script catches your eye. I think ShoBud sets a standard for appearance. I am glad to own a very nice LDG.

That new 14-string burgandy Excel of Bill Stafford's a real piece of class work. There are many out there that qualify as beautiful, but Bill's just sits there and radiates class that is paralleled only by his playing.

IMHO it is hard to beat Speedy West's Bigsby with the pedal cover!
The older lacquer Emmons especially with metal necks and the "castle wall" marquetry inlay are very nice. Mike Weirauch's burst metal neck is a real stunner.
The Carter Sd10 with the sausage quilt apron on their site is also eye fetching .
Terry Bethel's Super pro. |
