Garth Brooks and Shania Twain
A notable addition John, many thanks! Shame on me for overlooking those two.

It started the day Garth Brooks set off fireworks on stage and started leaping from amplifiers with his goofy Michael Jackson mic headset, and Shania Twain turned it into a sexy sassy woman fashion show rather than a concert.

This is NOT to say anything is wrong with their shows other than billing it under the title of "country" music. This began the blurring of the line between "country" and "performance pop".

Now all the new performers have to do is wear a hat and worn-out jeans and include the words "pickup truck", "Farm" and "Hound dog" in their lyrics, throw one fiddle player in the mix of distorted guitars and voila' - They are suddenly "Country" music's finest young talent.

Every generation has its own music, but damnit, they didn't have to kill us off to get it.

Your mileage may vary.

I guess you have two different subjects going on here in this thread Barry. The article you referenced was about the effect of MP3 files and the like on the recording industry, and now it has morphed into the inevitable "destruction of country music" topic. :whoa:

Mark, the "destruction of country music" is such a broad subject it just couldn't help eventually including other elements beside mp3's I guess... ;-)

One of the worst insults to country/bluegrass was "Cotton Eyed Joe" by Rednex, and that was twelve years ago. No link because it's too disgusting.

I never downloaded music, and I occasionly still buy CD's.
As to reissues of LP's I missed when they were released, YouTube diminishes the amount of sales.

Geoff,
I'm assuming that you know Fairport Convention. I think that this band sounds a lot like them. I bought a vinyl album not to long ago:

Thanks for the link Joachim, yes very Fairport Convention with a touch of the Grateful Dead in the catch guitar riff :)

Watching young bands such as this gives me hope that a new generation of musicians will rise from the ashes and actually play music. Back to the roots. Listened to some more of their music - nice, reminds me a bit of Vetiver.

A young local band that I know have asked me to put some steel down on their latest recordings, all original material, with a Scottish country music feel. They love the sound of the steel, (who doesn't!), I asked them what sort of style they wanted on it, should I keep it non-USA-Country, but no they want it to sound as country as possible.

As for the death of music as we knew it, here's a manifestation of the force responsible, y'know we're in trouble when a dog wins Britain's got talent for the 2nd year running

(And still had to cheat to win  )

I appreciate your reply, Geoff. Yes, these new bands seem to have nothing in common with the money making machine, they just want to be themselves. :)

There's a lot of good stuff out there, but, it'll never see the light of day on radio. You have to go search for it. Anyone remember some of those awful country-politan records ? Today's country is just a new spin on that....country learned how to make big $$$$. But it's not just country, it's all over the business. There is no more artist development with the labels anymore. Kind of like the old Elvis movies. Make 'em quick and cheap and make as much off of the King as we can.... :x

Here's what destroyed live music:

1. Rap. To dispicable & disgusting to even mention.

2. Karaoke...a word which translated literally means "entertainment for idiots". Due to the dumbing down of America, this has taken over as a viable entertainment form. In my day (60s-70s) Karaoke would've been laughed right outta the clubs.

3. Home entertainment. Now with PCs, DVDs,DVRs,60" plasma screens, gaming, online garbage, you no longer hafta leave the house on Friday night. Just push a button on the remote. I think this has been the biggest factor in killing live music. The first 2 should be made illegal. Total garbage.
A couple D-10s,some vintage guitars & amps, & lotsa junk in the gig bag.
