Archived Tabs - New "Revived" Tab Site!

Post by Ian Kelman »

It is with great excitement that I announce the "revival" of many of the Rebel, Ricky and Jeff's long lost steel tabs. Using the non-profit digital library Internet Archive and a little "internet archeology", I was able to dig up a good number of these invaluable resources, and page by page over the past few months, I have built a brand new "mobile friendly" archive site from my discoveries.

I was very sad to see the original site go offline. Years ago, the old site provided me with a jump start into understanding the instrument we all love and live for. I truly believe that having resources among our community is necessary to keep the education alive and thriving for those eager for a way into the "club"... as well as for seasoned players, just looking to add a few tricks to their grab bag. I am forever grateful for the hard work, and many hours that were dedicated to building the original instructional library.

I have included all original notes from the various authors of the tabs that were available online from before, although due to the limited ways and means I was unable to determine who constructed which tablature - or include every single file or tab that was once existed... If anyone on the forum needs or wants credit where due... it would be my pleasure to add it, just let me know!

I will continually be working on and improving this site, as well as adding my own personal favorites to the collection, as I work them out. If anyone has anything they would like to contribute, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Without further ado, I give you http://rebelsteel.net.

Enjoy!

:D

That is awesome that you were able to recover most of the data and took the time to do so. Many thanks!

As the originators of the original site, Ricky and I have requested that Ian take this site down. Had we been approached beforehand, we would have made our thoughts on this clear before it got this far.

As most know, Ricky now sells his tab from the site on 2 zip files to augment his income. He also posts free of charge tab requests on this section of the Forum. As the major tabber on the original site, it is Rickys' right to sell or give away his tab and nobody can question all he has done on this Forum for fellow players.

I too will send to anybody who asks the tab and sound clip for requested songs that were on the site.

We appreciate the work Ian put into this but hope he can understand why we take our position on this.

I paid for Ricky's tab and was a super happy customer. Is there anyway this site could be left up with a tip jar for you guys? Just thinking out loud but it might be a good way for you guys to increase revenue on your hard work. Also, Jeff Rady has a pay site with some awesome tabs, I'd gladly pay for some new spot on tabs if you guys took requests.

Thanks,

Mark

I agree, perhaps a fee to access or as Mark says, a donation link would be in order?
I too paid a while back for Ricky's tabs.

Yep, the only way I found out about all those tabs was by blind luck. Would have been great had I known there's a website with all that stuff...even for a fee I would have paid for the stuff and probably would have found it sooner.

I could go along with that as long as the money goes to Ricky. I have no interest in making money from this nor did I when I first started the web site.

Perhaps something could be set up for that by Ian and if requested, I will provide the original sound clip from the original song, if it is requested of me, to anybody who donates to Ricky for tab. All music files are now mp3's, switched over from the original Real Audio .ra files, which is what I used when the site first started.

The ball is in you peoples court, I just don't want to see my little brother lose anything because of this.

Ian, thanks for you hard work in reviving the rebel pages. Ricky and Graham's work on the original was invaluable to my picking up the bar. These pages are a treasure trove!
Thank you Graham!

I also urge people who use this resource to donate your appreciation in dollar amounts to Ricky Davis.
This stuff is gold!

Is site up?

Post by steve takacs »

I have tried to access the site using the address Ian has given and also one without the period at the end with no luck. For those of you who are able to get on the site, which address are you using?

This could just be a problem because I am in China. Sometimes, sites are blocked here.

The old Rebel and Ricky site was an invaluable tool for those of us who love the pedal steel so I hope some compromise can be reached. Thanks for getting the ball rolling again, Ian.

If I remember correctly, weren't most of the tabs contributed by other members and organized by year on the site by Graham and Ricky? Thanks, steve t

Steve:
I can access the site just by clicking on the link Ian put in his first post.

In reference to your comment on the tabs, the vast majority of them were done by Ricky, followed by Jeff Lampert. The rest were done and emailed to me by various Forum members like Joey Ace, Fred Amendola, Joe Barcus, Harold Bullard, Buddy Emmons and others I can't easily recall to memory.

Something else that needs mentioning is the fact that Ricky tabbed out the intro and break for "Look At Us" and it was originally on the 1991 page. When I attended St. Louis in 2001, in speaking with John Hughey, I saw he was selling the tab for that song. When I got home, I called Ricky and told him that and we agreed to remove the tab from the site. We have not offered that tab to anybody since then. It was not our place to take money out of his pocket for something he alone owned.

The site originally just started out being sound clips of intros breaks etc. until Ricky contacted me and asked if he could tab some of them out. That idea caught on big time and everything else just followed.

In regards to the actual music clips, I had to go thru the RIAA as I didn't want any copyright issues. Sent them a demo page and the song clips to show what I wanted to do. There were never any copyright issues raised with the site after that.

Originally started out as Real Audio (.ra) files, I then converted them all to mp3's.

I should note that I also did a Gospel Steel section of 9 pages with 15 sound clips on each page. These were mainly Southern Gospel and country gospel tunes.

It is NOT me permitting to use the site. The site belongs to Graham and I loved helping tab a bunch of the greatest steel guitar pieces. I did offer up a huge amount of the stuff I tabbed or helped with on the site not long ago; but that is not even CLOSE to the full amount of everything tabbed on the site.
Graham has put countless hours and passion into the "Rebel and Ricky" site from of course day one to and through all the years. It turned into a greatness of steel guitar sound clips and tab that has been. It really really is up to Graham if he wants to continue it online or have it continued; it is his baby, he is the Cornerstone of what and why it is one of the greatest steel guitar sites ever.
Graham offered me to ride along with him years ago...and I would ride with the man thru eternity and I agree and go along with everything he does and is going to do.

Thanks, Ricky.
Get well soon, little brother!

I phoned Ian about this and he did up an entry page for his new site where players can make a donation to Ricky for his hard work. I made it plain to Ian that I want no money from this but most everybody on the forum knows Rickys' situation after his accident.

I hope those availing themselves of his work can see their way to helping him out.

For those that get tab from Ian's site, I can provide the mp3 clip for it if you contact me.
