I had quite the day last Sunday, when my wife stopped by a mini storage sale up here in the Placerville foothills area.

She called me and said there was a Webb amp, supposedly the 2nd prototype, manufactured when Jimmy Webb was trying out different things for his 6-14-E steel guitar model.

There no serial number on it, but it has a Black Widow 1501-4 in it instead of the JBL E130 speaker, and oddly, the back plate and name plate are a reddish-brown color, with white lettering.

Although I tend to be a skeptic at heart about rare instruments and amps... I plan to proceed as if this is a very old amp (early '70s), and when I have my tech guy give it a once over, I'll have him note the date on the pots.

I will say this... it sounds like butter!!!

I'll update this post when I know more about it... but the story from the previous owner is he was a close friend of Mr. Webb, and he bought this from him back in 1995, stored in the back of the workshop from much earlier days.

Congratulations for finding a rare vintage piece of equipment but most especially for having a wife that would recognize a Webb steel guitar amp in a storage unit sale.

You have chosen your mate wisely Very Happy

Tony, I'll pass on the congrats to my better half... after 41 years together... she can tell you the difference in sound, as well as weight between a Fender Twin, and a Session 500 Smile

Yep, she's a keeper!

Well....

In playing with the amp here in my studio, I discovered the amp is a real sweetheart. Smooth as butter milk! The Black Window 1501 however had a bad rattle... so I spent a few weeks trying to order a basket... thought I had one... but that bombed out...

...so I decided to put in a new Telonics TSNEO-15 speaker... and according to Fed Ex, it will arrive this afternoon.... so I hope to have it in and reply back to this thread later one this evening.

I also bought a newer ('90s?) Webb speaker cab, with an E130 in it... the amp sounds stunning through that... and so does my Quilter with it as a 2nd speaker!

More news when I get the new speaker in it.. hopefully today!

David,

Congrats on the WEBB discovery. Nice find !

It's only my opinion, but, the Telonics TSNEO 15"
will make that Webb sing.

Waiting to hear your thoughts.

Oh yeah! This is one fine speaker.

Sounds just great with the Webb, and in fact I hooked it up to my Quilter, and it sounded like the twin of the Eminence neo speaker that came with the Quilter (hmmmmmm?... I wonder).

Big time thanks to fine folks at Telonics, great to deal with, and they make some mighty fine PSG products!!!

Now it time to send the Webb in for it's 35 year checkup Smile

So little time, so many amps!

Great! Thanks for the update. Any pics of the prototype and do you know what reverb tank was used?

Kevin, no pix yet... but I plan on taking a bunch when the amp tech has the amp out on the bench.... the reverb tank looks very much like what Peavey used back then... I'll take a look at it when we have the amp out of the cab. I'm interested in dates on the pots as well!

Jerry, sent you an email.

Kevin, our band that used to play 3 or 4 times a month has literally caught on fire this summer season, and we have been so busy rehearing and gigging, I have decided to let the Webb tech work wait until this fall when the private parties bookings slow down....

So I will post whatever I find then.... sorry for the delay.. but it is good to be busy playing music Smile

When it rains... ect.
