Just ordered one for my Dobro will let you know how well it works next week. I just need a little more signal so I can run it through my amp and them mike the amp, should work great. _________________ '70 D10 Black fatback Emmons PP, Hilton VP, BJS bars, Boss GE-7 for Dobro effect, Zoom MS50G, Stereo Steel amp, Telonics 15” speaker.

Larry, I'll be interested in hearing your opinion on this piece of gear. Did you order the ABS or the ABS-C (condenser)?
I've been thinking about getting one of these mics as well. I've used a clip-on saxophone condenser mic, and it has a lot of handling noise. |

I use a magnetic pickup with the amp to eliminate feedback- I'll be curious to hear how yours works out.... _________________ https://www.lostsailorspdx.com

I had one, but it never got played on stage. That ol' Guernsey STILL has a voice,Wooo-wee! I liked it a lot, especially the fact that the mike is on a little gooseneck, so you can put the mike about anywhere you want to. Try one out, if you can, before you buy it. Make sure it's what you want (it will be). |

For those that haven't tried it, the Fishman Nashville Series Pickup (replaces the bridge), in conjunction with the Jerry Douglas Aura, are the best that I have found (if you are after as much of the wood-tone acoustic qualities of the instrument).
Our FOH engineer does also use a Shure KSM32 that he blends in. (it's on a momentary footswitch), but I've gone to only having the pickup in my monitors.
Sincerely,

Big diff going through the PA or the amp.... On the amp you sacrifice tone to avoid feedback....the amp had limited frequency response anyway, so it already is a compromise- but at least setup is easy ( if already using amp for other instruments) and you have complete control _________________ https://www.lostsailorspdx.com

Thanks for the heads up Larry, I'd be interested in how it works out for you. The Fishman reso 'doughnut' PU I have now (used with the an LR Baggs Para-Acoustic Preamp/DI) seems to kill a bit of the resonance to my ear. I guess that's to be expected if you hang something on the cone.
For others who haven't seen it here's a link to the product page on Gold Tone:

Well with early testing I thinking it will give me a little boost in my amp used as a personal monitor, then mic the amp. The little switch box has t-m-b and volume control knobs and seems to work as advertised. Larry, I had one and gigged with it once. Didn't stay on, couldn't get any significant gain without tweaking the crap out of the EQ and had me standing in one spot to avoid the feedback. Other than that it was alright.
Then I made the change to the Fishman Jerry Douglas/Nashville saddle pickup used with the Fishman Aura pedal and I've never looked back. I am confident it's the best thing available for keeping a dobro sounding like a dobro and amplifying it without feedback on a stage with drums and electric bass.
The Gold Tone system may work for you. Let us know. |

Brian were you using the Fishman system a the last steel jam here in Portland? I am NOT looking to get loud on the small gig I am going to play. Now Jubitz might be feedback from hell, we will see. _________________ '70 D10 Black fatback Emmons PP, Hilton VP, BJS bars, Boss GE-7 for Dobro effect, Zoom MS50G, Stereo Steel amp, Telonics 15” speaker.

Hey Larry, I was assuming you were playing with an electric combo group, sorry.
I would amend my previous post and say that if you are looking for the amount of gain on stage that a mic on a stand would get you, the Gold Tone mic may work for you. I did find that the mounting system on it didn't make me feel confident and didn't seem rock solid but again, that was my guitar and set up.
Yes, I had the Fishman system last time at the steel jam.
Have fun! |

Brian what amp were you using at the jam?
This system really has to have the right kind of amp, my 100 watt personal hot spot monitor (on a mic stand) might do the job as I can turn it up and have it placed in different locations around me. My combo amps just do not cut it if you need to turn it up, feedback just as I thought and not much volume. My PA system needed be turned way up to get any sound and then there is the weight and number of extra pieces to lug around.
I talked to a band mate about an amp made for this purpose but am not ready to pull the $$$ trigger just yet. Also the Fishman system seems like the way to go but then again $$$$ for a small gig once every other month does not pencil out at this time.

Hey Larry,
I use a Fishman Loudbox Artist amp with my fishman equipped dobro setup. It's designed as an acoustic guitar amp I guess you'd say, it has full range of amplification unlike an regular guitar amp. No scoops or peaks, relatively flat full range.
I'm not sure exactly of your specific situation at this particular gig, but you might try putting a full range closed back amp (like the Fishman Loudbox) in front of you using your ABS mic.
With regard to micing a dobro, Bob Knetzger likes to say, "good volume or good tone, you can get one or the other without feedback but not both." |

I have a magnetic pickup in my dobro, the Lace Ultra Slim, and I simply can NOT play it at loud volume without feedback. I've tried small and large rooms, through my combo amps (NV112 and Fender Steel King) and direct to PA. Once I reach decent volume the strings start vibrating out of control and feedback
Am going to order the Fishman spider pu but don't want to install it.....any suggestions where to send it in New England/NY area? _________________ Sierra S10 (three!), Peavey 112 and 115, Benoit dobro, Beard Model E dobro, Beard Roadophonic, MSA Superslide, Dean Nickless custom dobro |

Tony, Paul Beard's shop is in Hagerstown, MD. Probably where you'd want to go. http://www.beardguitars.com/contact-beard-guitars/ I believe he'll do work like this on other builders guitars but I'm not sure of this.
Plan on using the Fishman JD Aura pedal to fully utilize that saddle pickup. Helps tame the piezo "quack" and greatly improves tone and adds sound choices. |

This was my conclusion as well. Of couse there are exceptions, but they usually have a guy at the board looking out for them. _________________ To write with a broken pencil is pointless. |

I was an early adopter of the Fishman system. I must say that I haven't yet played a venue that I couldn't dial myself in quite nicely.
In smaller venues I rely on the Loudbox Artist for front of house. In larger venues I just hand off a low impedance signal from either the amp's DI or the Platinum Pro eq/DI on my pedal board. In this example I use the amp as a stage monitor.
Pros-It is a wonderful system and if you need the capability it's really the only system of it's kind on the market.
Cons-Self install is not recommended and it is expensive. About $575 installed (pup, pedal, spider), not including amp.
Speaking of amps. I hear from a lot of folks that they prefer the Loudbox Mini over the more expensive Artist fwiw. I generally favor "acoustic" instrument amps. They are voiced so much better then amps voiced for steel, guitar, etc.
I can tell that I've played at some "stupid" volumes (read hearing protection) and this system works ohhh, so well.
If you "need" it there is nothing else like it.
cheers
