This was posted on one of the computer support forums that I belong to. I haven't tried it but from responses to the original post others have and it works.

Say your email is fred@gmail.com if you add + between fred and @ you can have as many email address as you like so you can have fred+spam@gmail.com fred+work@gmail.com they all go to fred@gmail.com but you can set filters to move them to work spam folders handy for sign up so you can see were spam comes from

I just gave this a try and it worked for me. I believe that the '+' may be reserved character in the email protocols and that this is a special handling by gmail. In any event, this could be useful for some, so I hope that gmail leaves it alone.

I'm trying to figure out why someone would need to do this. It's not really a good way to "hide" your email address, as your address is part of the email address with the '+'. If this spreads as common knowledge, anyone who knows can figure out your email address. I guess it would fool the 'bots' that cruise around the web harvesting email addresses, well, until they update the bots to strip the plus sign out (if they can, or really, even need to. They can just spam that address and they would infest your regular email account.).

I just write spam filters to block known spam tactics and unwanted senders and domains. I have been doing this for years, especially for MailWasher Pro users. I also write corresponding spam filters that can be used in cPanel to protect your own websites' email accounts, if you use that feature.
