Topic: Most popular tuning nut lengths? |

My question is perhaps a strange one to ask here, but this Index topic seems the most appropriate, so here goes: Most guitars employ tuning nuts that require a 3/16" nut driver and are 3/8" in length. WHAT OTHER LENGTHS ARE POPULAR AND WHAT BRANDS OF PEDAL STEELS USE THEM? To put it another way, I'm aware that the 3/16" (outside nut-driver size) is the typical dimension for these tuning nuts. What I'm wanting to know is how long are the ones now used on most steels other than the 3/8".
The reason I'm asking is that my supplier requires a minimum purchase of 4,000 tuning nuts. That's far more than I need of one size. But, if I order 1,000 of 3 other lengths I can make a minimum order. I'd appreciate your input. ...Tom |

Tom, Emmons LeGrande uses 3/4" on 4-40 threads. Later Zums I believe are 1 3/8" also small hole. Older Zums and Franklin used larger diameter hole for 1/8" pull rods. I believe Franklin used 1 1/2" long tuning nuts. Carter used the small diameter hole and I think 1 1/4" length but I am not certain. I do know 1" will work fine on Carter and Magnum.
I know nothing about Mullen. A small diameter can be drilled if you take time to not overheat it. I don't think 3/8" is a modern day popular size Tom.

While it's not used on today's guitars, it was used on almost 10,000 older MSA guitars. Many of them will need replacing at some point, probably sooner than later, so it could be a pretty popular item if the price is right.  |

Yep, you are right Donny and a lot of them are still in use today for sure. Am I correct that the rod size is 1/8" on those older MSAs? This hole size thing makes Tom's endeavor more complicated.

Yes, the older MSAs used 1/8" rods. |

Franklin's use 1/8" rod with a 6-40 thread. I don't recall the length.
Different size rods on different steels, as noted, complicates ordering. |

| Carter Pro models and Magnums use 1-1/8" on 3/32 rod. I think it's a 4-40 thread. |

Jerry, I'm getting older like the rest of us, but overall I'm okay, thanks!
The thread size on the rod doesn't matter for these calculations, just the diameter. The nylon tuning nuts aren't threaded, because they make their own threads when screwed onto the rods. |
