I have read on some other threads that guys are using and happy with amps like the Peavey Bandit Transtube....Yamaha G100 ii.... Lab Series L5....Musicman...
If you are using something slightly out of the ordinary. .. let us know what you like and dislike about it. ... speaker matching. ..etc... how does it compare to other amps. ..
Make sure you mention your guitar and pickup or an amp recommendation won't be much help.

Behringer UB-1222FX Pro mixer to a Harbinger V2112 power PA speaker. Sounds great, good full bodied sound.
Chain:
Steel>volume pedal>Zoom MS-50G, L/R outs>mixer stereo channel>speaker.
Hope to add another speaker later, for PA and "stereo steel". _________________ Amateur Radio Operator NA4IT (Extra)

Sometimes I run a Magnatone Varsity or a National New Yorker through my Roland JC-77 with the chorus in manual mode and rate and depth all the way down. Some days I really like the sound, and other days it just doesn't work for me... |

I use to have a Lab L9 (15" speaker ) and absolutely love it for double duty pedal & lap steel.
Had some issues and really couldn't find anyone to work on it with satisfactory results...
So I sold it, but IMHO one of the cleanest, loudest, best amps I'd ever owned...
They have a great EQ section with a whole lot of tonal flexibility.

Tried a Sundown Artist 112 but couldn't find a decent tone. |

I'm using a '63 Standel Imperial XV hybrid (transistor pre, tube power amp and phase inverter). It sounds huge with the matching "bass reflex" cab and jbl speaker. |

Did anyone ever compare a Yamaha B100 ii to a Yamaha G100ii?
The B100 has a15... and looks like two parametric controls. .. might be interesting.... |

Fender Jazzmaster Ultralight. 2 channels, 250 solid state watts, excellent effects section for each channel with rev-delay setting. Cabinet has 12" Jensen neo (closed back), and weighs under 20 pounds. Head is carried in a bag and weighs about 7 pounds. I bought this amp for a recurring jazz guitar gig that was up a flight of stairs. Purchase was based on the weight and size. It ended up becoming my go to for most gigs.
I had sold my 85 pound beast with plans of getting a Nashville 112. In the interim I started practicing with this amp and haven't looked back. It's really nice for E9 and a little lacking for C6. This said I'd really like to play through a Steelaire, Half & Half and Telonics to see if I'm missing something. _________________ Justice Pro Lite (4-5), Justice D-10 (8-5)x2 , Quilter Steelaire, Hilton Pedal, BJ's bar. |

Thought I would give a quick update... I played last night at the nursing home and my new setup sounds great! The normal steel sounds like a full bodied steel, the dobro setting sounds like a dobro, and the organ patch sounds like organs! _________________ Amateur Radio Operator NA4IT (Extra)

+1000. Abdo'lutely a wonderful steel and Tele amp. EV 15. Doesn't sound like a solid state amp! Sounds like powerful tubes. Was completely bummed when I sold it cuz a friend at TNN was able to get me a Peavey Nashville. Hayed that Nashville. _________________ Dr. Z Surgical Steel amp, amazing!

The Steelaire seems very much the "new Lab 9".
I'd have bought a Lab 9 but SWMBO said "no old amps." I could have made a sale on an old Twin because point-to-point wiring, but I nixed the Twin my ownself. Wanted flatter. Wanted less (input) tubey goodness. Good choice as it turns out. Could have gone Ultralinear Twin but resale is not good...
I just don't want to spend the rest of my life sweating the pedal range to keep from offending a perfectly good 12AX7. Yes, I could pad it down, but I'd rather use an amp that has an input designed for steel. Took me ... years to figure this out; not gonna waste the investment.
I read here that somebody used a preamp and a QSC K10 or K12 powered speaker. Thought about that but the case shape is a problem - it's made to go up a pole. Yeah, could have built little stands but... nah.
Might pick up a Peavey 400 watter just to see what the fuss is about. I remember PeeVees having a nasal honk I'd have to EQ out. the 2k cut on the Steelaire is in just the right place...
If I have a point, it is that for the risk of an older amp, one who is drooling over a Steelaire might be able to make do with an L9. |

Polytone Mini-Brute II. Popular with jazz guitarists. (Mine used to belong to Joe Pass.) Cool little amp.
Used it on the bandstand for years and years during the '70s & '80s in all but the largest of venues.
1973 Emmons D-10 with factory pickups > 3' cable > Emmons volume pedal > 12' cable > Polytone Mini-Brute II.
Worked quite well for me. Very portable and sounded just as good if not better than my Peavey LTD 400 with its factory JBL.
Still have it. Still use it, but mainly for flattop 6-string with a Fishman thinline pickup and outboard preamp setup. Very versatile and underrated amp.
Only problem is when they blow, nobody knows how to fix 'em, and Polytone is notorious for bad customer service. |
