When I first started playing steel I always had to have on cowboy boots so I'd look the part even if I couldn't quite play that well. I use to go watch guys like Herbie Wallace, Bobby Symour, Doug Jernigan and so on and noticed they didn't wear cowboy boots at the shows I saw them play. They wore very plain loafers or casual shoes. Now that I'm older, I still can't play worth a dam but I've gotten away from the boot scene and have been for many years now. I like the shoes with soles that are thinner and flexible so I can feel the pedals and control them a little better. I also stay away from boot because they inhibit my ankle movement some and add too much height to my volume pedal foot. I played in my socks for awhile till one night some girl pointed out my big toe sticking out the end of my sock I was curious if anyone had preferences or if there's even a standard that you all stick with. When ya think about it, it's a pretty important part of controlling that thing. Anyway, I just curious. |

I wore cowboy boots for years, and for the same reason, but walking in what amounts to high heels got to be uncomfortable as I got older, and I switched to Skechers a few years ago.Much more comfortable, and they're available in black,so as not to draw attention. |

Casual loafers, leather upper rubber sole. Like you the cowboy boot deal was wrong for me. I have a certain pair that I use for playing and little else. I like to feel the pedals and the softer sole works perfectly. |

I've seen a lot of things beat to death on here. There must be 128,697 questions about "Tone" but they still keep coming in. I must have missed the thread about shoes or foot accouterments. My suggestion is to not bother to read topics you feel are beaten to death the way I avoid topics about "Tone". |

I have many, but these are my most comfortable steelin' shoes
When I play out I have my granddaughter paint my toenails with sparkle paint.

They are worn out, I always put them on when I play, and I bought them from Sue (RIP), who used to sell stuff at the Newbury Steel Guitar Festival.

Yo Barry... Is that the same pair you were wearing at Cowtown? Where can I get a pair?

Ian... I've tried those shoes that Sarah is wearing hoping I would sound like her. Didn't happen. She has some extraterrestrial powers that makes them work. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . In one band, I use the New Balance Minimus MT20BG
It's an older model, but light as a feather and not too heavy vibram sole. I have wide feet and New Balance has width sizing
Since it's a modern country band, I'm probably more appropriately dressed than anyone else except the female singer!
In other bands when in doubt I wear black Nocona boots with regular toe. _________________ --carl

Carl,
I'm sorry, but you can't get them in black. Black Woose's are on the endangered species list. |
