Coal Train Boogie - From Midi to Tab?

Post by Ellio Martina »

Hi Folks,

I know a lot of you players would like to have a Tab sheet for this great Paul Franklin instrumental.
For some time I have been practicing the tune and I'm making some progress on playing it on my MSA 12-string universal, mainly by playing along with the original imported in Cubase.
This way it's easy to select a part and then let it play in a loop.

Since many notes are passing by quite fast, it is not so easy to follow and identify all the notes played, so I created a Midi track by listening to a time stretched version.

An advantage of having a midi file, is that you can create a score sheet in case your software is able to generate it.
With this score sheet, it should be easy to create a steel guitar tab.
Unfortunately I am too busy to work out the steel tab. But I guess there will be someone amongst the members of this forum to assist.
I just finished the midi file for the first part.
Had to adjust the timing of the notes a little bit to keep the score straightforward and easy to read.

The midi file and the score PDF file can be downloaded here:
http://www.em-guitars.com/download/CTB_midi_part01.mid
http://www.em-guitars.com/download/CTB_part01.pdf

The midi file contains the lead track and a simple drum track.
I created the file with Cubase, but did not export it in a general midi format, so you need to assign the instruments after importing it in your DAW software.

By the way, here is a Youtube of Pam Tillis where they mixed Coal Train Boogie with The Last train To Clarksville

With best regards from the Netherlands

That is interesting. What I do is slow a track way down and then loop it note by note until I have all of them. To speed things up I play the looped note into an electronic tuner. Usually the tuner will focus on the right note.

Acustica Mixcraft works real well but any recording program will slow down and loop.

I'm guessing there's still no transcription for Coal Train Boogie?
Was this song on any cd's of Buddy's or just the video I've seen.

Hi Gordy, Thanks! Just this week I made the youtube into an Mp3, burn it to disc and slowed it down. Charted it. this just Pauls version. Corrections please! Also I would like to know how to chart using a program besides me writing it out.

Has anyone figured out the "crazy" lick they play on the G chord at the of the steel and guitar solos?
