we can joke all we want, I just had a chance to hear Gary Morse playing Fender 2000 another day, and it sounded awesome, beautiful christal clear E9 tone, and awesome, full C6 jazz tone...absolutely beautiful and great sounding guitar, and Gary was using cheap, small guitar amp, I can't even imagine what would have happened if guitar was hooked up to a Webb 6-14 or some other high end amp

You never know. Given how ridiculous the vintage guitar world is, someone likely thought "old fender" = $$$$ without knowing that its not a strat or 52' tele.

people have no problem asking $10.000 for an old Franklin, why would asking the same price for much more rare, vintage Fender 2000 be out of the line?

Vintage Value

Post by Andy Eder »

Demir,

1952 is officially the first year for the Gibson Les Paul Guitar but because it was thought to be difficult to play because of the trapeze tailpiece, it is the least expensive of the 5 different versions of 1950's Les Paul Standards.

Average Les Paul Standard Values in excellent, all original, not repaired, and not mint condition:

1952-53---------$15K

1953-55---------$25K

1955-57---------$45K

1957-60---------$150K

The moral of the story is the rarest is not always the most valuable.

Best,

Yes, but he is asking $8,800.00.

Do you consider that realistic?

It doesn't matter what I consider realistic, I don't consider reslistic paying $150K for old Less Paul, or $10K for used Franklin either, but people still buy it, I'm just saying that what he is asking for his Fender is not anything shocking comparing to some other instruments selling out there...

Anyone who asks 5 times the market value of something doesn't really want to sell it.

IMO ads like this are just "show off" ads, not serious ads by serious sellers. The guy just wants to brag about his mint condition guitar and show some nice pictures.

Damir,

The difference as I see it are that some players and collectors are actually paying the prices I listed for '50's Les Pauls.

Are you aware of anyone who has paid anywhere near $8,800.00 for a Fender 2000?

That's the difference.

Maybe it's me who's confused. Is this for sale here?

If not, what's the difference?

A '59 Les Paul Does have a market value of $100K+ That's Not an insane price for an all original 50's Les Paul. That's the market price.

On the other hand... $8800 for a Fender 2000 is about 5 times over market value.

If we all agree that a Bigsby or a Franklin PSG is worth about $7K today... then 5 times that would be $35K. So this Craigslist ad for the $8800 Fender is like asking $35K for a Bigsby or a Franklin. That asking price tells me that the "seller" does Not want to sell the guitar. In other words, it's not really for sale. It's for Show only.

It doesn't really matter, does it? If someone lists a car for sale on the used market for $25K but the Kelly Blue Book reads that it's worth $10K then only an idiot would buy it for $25K.

Same thing with a steel guitar that is priced much higher than the going rate for the same instrument. If someone is dumb enough to pay ballpark $8K for this Fender, then congratulations to the seller.

But in this age of almost instant communication of the internet and letting one's fingers do the googling, if I were the seller I wouldn't be holding my breath.

After he receives some realistic offers in line with the going rate on the steel, maybe he will wake up and smell the coffee.

Or not.

Yeah, you're right, Mark. The seller is fishing for a sucker. Someone who's dumb enough to pay five times what it's worth and not do the research.

Thanks, Mark, I think I understand now that this is a discussion about pricing and isn't a guitar for sale in the forum classifieds.

You're right, Erv, somebody is smoking something.
I'll ask about the weight next time I have $8800.

He wants to trade- I would consider trading my 1992 Jaguar with 250K on it. Kelley Blue Book says it is worth about $11K. Kidding.

I am not, but I am not aware of anyone paying $150K for LP either...which actually, I don't care about, I will never pay $150K for LP or $10K for Franklin, or $8800 for Fender 2000 anyway...what I'm trying to say is, just because this guitar may not be worth $8800 to us, there may be someone out there to whom it is...
