Bud Carter

Post by Al Brisco »

My heart sunk when I got the phone message from Bud's wife informing me that Bud died at 8:00 P.M. yesterday.

In my mind he was one of the most knowledged people regarding pedal steel guitar in the world!

He had 100's of ideas that he never got a chance to develop!
God Bless

A double whamy for me.

I worked for Maurice Anderson and with Bud Carter back in the early 70s at the old MSA factory. We stayed friends all through the years. Both are missed along with John Fabian I knew but not as well as Bud and Reece. I miss them all.

I never got to know many of the Dallas pickers as I coulden't stay off the road which I loved to do back then. Tracy

Wow! What a Guy!

Bud built my first new guitar while working for MSA in Oak Cliff area of Dallas. It had a wooden neck and the tailpiece was filed down for the tuning keys to fit. This man was a genius. There is probably not a steel made today that doesn't have some of Bud Carter's
workability. RIP my friend.

This is such sad news. As I write this I'm sitting behind one of those guitars that bears his signature. He was a revolutionary designer and builder of pedal steel guitars as well as a great and under-rated musician. My deepest condolences to his family.

This is so sad. When I became an MSA dealer back in the 70's Bud came into Reece's office and did all the measurements he needed. Reece had him build a custom Vintage XL 12 string for me. Bud was such a great guy to work with when I needed something.

Rest in peace my friend you will be greatly missed.

Bud Carter built my first pedal steel while he was working for MSA.in the70,s.

While I never owned a Carter I spent a lot of hours in and out of small shop where he Worked for the Fabians.

He along with Bobby Bowman were two of the most skilled people I knew working on steel guitars.

I consider Bud the the most expert builder, technician, in the business. A great guy.

Close to 20 years of my steel playing career were spent behind 2 MSA guitars that had his signature underneath.

I'm just one of the steel-players lucky enough, and justly proud, to own a steel-guitar with his surname on the front.

Thanks Bud, for your inventiveness, diligence, ability to innovate, design skills and insight, your love of the instrument itself and the desire to build great steel-guitars.

RIP and Godspeed. My sincerest condolences to his friends and family. He will me misssed, but never forgotten.
The steel guitar is a hard mistress. She will obsess you, bemuse and bewitch you. She will dash your hopes on what seems to be whim, only to tease you into renewing the relationship once more so she can do it to you all over again...and yet, if you somehow manage to touch her in that certain magic way, she will yield up a sound which has so much soul, raw emotion and heartfelt depth to it that she will pierce you to the very core of your being.

So sorry to hear about this. Bud was a terrific guy and and a great engineer, but also a great musician. I shared a story on Facebook about a time that I was having a phone conversation with John Fabian, and I couldn't keep my attention on what he was saying because of the incredible steel playing going on in the background. I finally asked who was in the shop playing, and he said "Oh, that's just Bud, messing around". I almost asked John to be quiet so I could listen.

We learned of this news in the Dallas Show yesterday, and his absence was very conspicuous as he always performed every year. Bud was a little man, but was a giant in the world of steel guitar construction. Many of his ideas have been copied and incorporated in modern pedal steels. RIP Mr Steel Guitar.

I don't even know where or how to begin to express my sadness and heartbreak at this news. Bud was one of the greatest friends and innovators the steel guitar community ever knew. My deepest sympathies, condolences and prayers go out to his family, friends, loved ones and all who knew him. Rest in the arms of the Lord, Bud.

So sorry to hear of Bud's passing. He worked on a D-10 Carter for me last year and I got to visit with him. He was so kind and helpful through the whole process. Prior to my arriving he had been running a chain saw and cutting down some trees on his property. I thought, "Man I hope I can do that when I am his age". A true gentleman and expert in the field of pedal steel guitar. May he rest eternally with the angels.

THERE AFTER. BUD WAS THE PRIMARY DESIGNER OF THE MSA, THE MCI AND THE CARTER BRANDS.
AS A BUILDER, WRITER AND SPEAKER, HE SHARED HIS MECHANICAL INNOVATIONS WITH THE WORLD

Oh this is very sad news. As others have said, Bud was a true gentleman, very sweet and interested in assisting you in any way he could. I spoke with him by phone a couple years ago and he gave me over an hour of his time. The call ended with Bud saying please call again and let me know you are doing. Gosh, he seemed so full of life. I hate to hear this news. My condolences to Bud's family. You will be missed Bud.

Such heartbreaking news. My sincerest condolences and most fervent prayers for Bud's family and friends. These are the things that make getting up in years hard to deal with.

Physical aging is nothing compared to the emotional pain of loved ones passing away! May God comfort all the hearts who are saddened by Bud's passing.
Best regards,
Mike
