Have a 1989 Sierra Crown which I am trying to add a LKR lever to the C6th neck. I have removed the two back legs and removed the 4 screws holding the back apron to the body. Question is, are there any screws under the mica on top that also hold this apron on? Need to loosen it up so I can get the lever installed. Any help appreciated.

Bobby Lee is an expert with the Sierra Crown. Maybe he will see your post and help. You might consider sending him a direct email. I would suggest you take a large screwdrive plastic handle and bump the plate on the bottom edge. I would think that the plate is just stuck, but try to get Booby's advice. He played one of these for a while.

Thanks, Harold, but I don't currently have a Sierra Crown to look at. I don't think I ever had to remove the back apron on one.
I'm looking at my Olympic, which is similar, and I really can't tell how the apron is attached. Looks like it must be under the formica.
The long slots are there to make it possible to remove the crossrods. I remember that I had to do that once, and it is a pain, but I didn't have to remove the apron.

Thanks for the reply folks. My problem is trying to get the lever installed (mounted) into the back apron. There is just not enough room to put it in without removing the apron. No problem putting in the cross rod or the rest of the hardware. |

I can put everything in with no problem except the lever mounting hardware it's self. Need to move that apron about 1/16" of an inch to get it in the slot. [This message was edited by Roy McKinney on 18 May 2004 at 05:30 AM.] |

Roy,
I am not sure about the Crown series, but I fought a similar problem for days on my former Session D-10. Finally called and spoke to Tom Baker. He agreed it was tough. And he sent me another one where he had ground off just enough metal so it would slide in between the rear apron and that rail.
It was still difficult but I finally got it in. Again this was on a D-10 Session. So not sure exactly what to say on a Crown series. But it might be the same. NOTE: Even the head of the bolt had to be ground down to clear the rail while installing it.
You might consider this. I do not believe that rail is a separate piece on the Session. Rather all one extrusion. Might be the same on the Crown. Not sure.

Thanks Carl,that is exactely the problem I am having. The bolt (pin) that holds the two pieces together is what is stopping me from getting it in. Not much material left there to grind off, and not sure if I could grind enough off to get it in. Still hoping for a solution yet. To bad there isn't a way I could call Tom. To many Bakers in the phone book and he might not even be listed. Thanks for the response.

The apron isn't a separate piece. It's a solid extrusion. |

Sadly, the ONLY way I was able to get the one Tom sent me in, was to take a crowbar and wedge it in the knee lever slot on the rear apron. I am sorry to tell you it messed it up a bit. But I found NO other way to get it in. The original one was NOT going in no matter what I did.
Having worked on PSG's for over 40 yrs I can tell you that there are things manufacturer's do that simply blow my mind. That clearance between the rear apron and the real rail is JUST too narrow. Just a 1/16 of an inch could turn a nightmare into a piece of cake.
But even here, it can not come close to the blunder Emmons' LeGrandes have when it comes to removing a crossbar. That one has got to take the prize for the worst boob I have ever encountered.

Hi Carl, and thanks for the kind words and the crowbar. I got my problem solved, and now have the LLKR lever in place. Just accomplished that this afternoon and now I just have to get the rest of the little pieces put in which should be a piece of cake after that last ordeal. With the help of a good file and some great verbal instructions and a "padded" piece of steel rod that little turkey dropped in like it was suppose to be there. Again thanks to everyone who offered me help on this. It was much appreciated.
