Do you guys remember the superpicker award? It was the award given to session players for playing on the most hits within a given year. Chet also recorded an album with one years winning band.

Does anyone know which steel guitarists won this award per year in the 70's?

Just found this via Google searches:
John Hughey 1976-77 (from http://www.johnhughey.com/resume.html)

Pete Drake 1975-1977, 1979 (from http://www.countryworks.com/artist_full.asp?KEY=DRAKE)

There must be more info out there....

Here's what I found: http://www.ronoates.com/jes2.html
Scroll down to "Superpicker Award".

It appears that this award's inception was 1974 and it ended in 1979. If that's correct the above posts would indicate that only two steelers were ever awarded (John Hughey and Pete Drake). However the two posts above do conflict. They have both John and Pete receiving the award in 76' and 77'. Not sure which is correct.

Respectfully,

From Lloyd Green:

To whom it may concern:
The Superpicker awards for recording musicians was sponsored and held each year from 1974 through 1979 by NARAS, with a banquet and awards ceremony. In 1975 & 1978 I was voted into the Superpicker Band. This award was for having played on the most #1 records those years. In one of the two, Pete Drake was given the same award since he and I played on the same number and most #1s that year.
In 1978 & 1979 I was voted the "Most Valuable Steel Player". This was an award voted on by the recording musicians, background singers, recording engineers and record producers. The one question asked on the voting form was, "If you were doing the most important record of your career next week, who would you want on steel guitar, electric, piano, etc."?
As I write this I am looking at these awards hanging on the walls in my office in case there are those who doubt the veracity of this statement.
Also hanging on one wall are the individual award scrolls given by NARAS for each individual #1 record played on in each of those years.
The following are the years and number of #1s I played steel on during this brief period.
1974 : 8
1975 : 8
1976 : 8
1977 : 7
1978 : 8
1979 : 5
After this interlude of 6 years the awards ceased, never to be repeated.

Thank you,
Lloyd Green
