I had an experience a number of years ago with finding a very fine dust that showed up on the black underbelly of my guitar in the case. After some looking, I found that the culprit was the fabric lining the case, or should I say the underlying material backing, and glue that keeps the fabric attached.

As with most things glue and fabric, stuff might begin to breakdown with age and get brittle. The resulting residue/dust can be hard to spot on the underbelly of lighter color guitars. Banging cases around going to and from gigs can loosen stuff up, and the case is in the perfect position to give your guitar a dusting when you lay it down and open the case to set it up. Keep an eye on parts you've recently used a lubricant on.

A vacuum cleaner using a bristle type upholstery attachment and a wipe with a very lightly dampened cloth on the inside of your case helps. The bristle type attachment is soft and might prevent you from damaging the material. Make sure your fabric is completely dry before you re-case your rig.

The newer egg crate foams in road cases can collect their share of debris as well.

We've all found little treasures hiding in the corners and along the edges of cases. And that was the stuff we could see!

Broken string ends are common. They can slip down into your changer and be lost temporarily until you flip the guitar over in the case then they dislodge and wear against a nicely polished end plate.
