No matter how careful you are, eventually you will scratch the finish when changing strings in a hurry.
Not anymore, a xmas tree shaped piece of black denim inside the keyhead frame:

not if you cut out a thin piece of colored plastic or plexi glass to fit the key head under the strings to protect the finish !

Anal? probably but at then end of time the finish will not be scratched !

On my D10 Carter, both key heads have a thin piece of black plastic , fit, under the strings, you can't tell, but they are there... pay no attention to the dust, spring cleaning is around the corner !

Thanks guys...your post was just 24 hrs too late Olli. Last nite I was winding on a new string and at the last minute noticed I left the cut end just a bit too long and it would have scratched the finish. When I reached in to bend it to the side I promptly drove it halfway through my thumb!

I do the same thing on my steels! I use translucent plastic cut from a "page protector" sheet.

This time I put the cloth in before the first string change.
I`m relieved that other people do it too.

That bird has flown. Too late here too. Also unfortunate is that the inside of the aluminum keyhead of my Fessenden is painted black. That has gotten scraped up. Not something I care a lot about but I'd have taken a bit more care if I'd realized that it wasn't just shadow--it was paint.

Something else I've done --- the expanse of polished neck between the end of the fretboard and the pickup gets marred by (what I presume to be) dead skin that sits and chemically reacts. It needs a Simichrome rub to clean it up--mere dusting doesn't do it. I have laid down a shield of mylar (cut to shape) for this. Unfortunately I lost it and need to cut another and the neck is a mess right now.
What's that about, anyway? Acids? Salts?
