I imagine it is a "transition" guitar.. Newer style body yes, but if Sho Bud had enough older parts in stock , they were NOT going to go in the garbage.. they were going to get used.. Fender is notorious for using up "old stuff" before the "latest and greatest" parts went into production instruments.. I have seen Gibson guitars with a mixture of newer chrome parts [around 1966] and older nickel plated parts [65 and older], and all kinds of odd parts mixes especially on Firebirds and SG's... There are several old Fender steels with sunburst bodies, but stamped pedals instead of later cast pedals.. Builders use up existing parts inventory before using redesigned parts. Expensive parts are not wasted... bob

What an odd guitar! Special order? By the time they went to square front and narrow pedals, they'd had two "upgrades" mechanically. The very good barrels behind two hole pullers, starting with Lloyds in late '73, and the brass discs with nylon tuners sometime in '74.

Yikes.. Narrow pedals yes,but with the old style crosshatch like the wide pedals had???.. I have never seen that before on any Bud... Could it be they were wide pedals that were cut down at some point???. very strange indeed... bob

I suspect the pedals were shaved at some point. I've seen that done to more than a few old Buds before.
I like the old style diamond inlay...
Other than the fact that SB might have been using up old stock, why do you think anyone would want to retrofit (or special order) a ProII Custom with rack & barrel?
I mean, if you were a fan of rack & barrel (as I am), why not just find a Professional?

My guess is Pro II Custom guitar converted to rack and barrel. Might be refinished as well.
- Square front
- Dust catcher fretboards
- Post-Pro II bare underside (not painted)
- Extra screw holes
- Decals look newer (more white) for age
- Narrow pedals

What I originally sent to john billings when he asked me about it....also follows along with my brother Kenny Davis.
"Yes it is odd. The pedals are wide waffles cut down.
I think It's been refinished....as that is such a odd color and I guess Racks installed?? That's the weird part it being square front with racks.
It is highly possible when the original owner ordered a new shobud around that first year of the shobud Pro II custom....that he wanted the pulling system to be rack and barrel that he may have been more familiar with and wanted it that way....and shobud would do that as they were truly custom built.
