Which "new" pedal steel would you buy?

Instruments, mechanical issues, copedents, techniques, etc.

Which "new" pedal steel would you buy?

Post by Morton Kellas »

I am only talking a "new" manufactured steel. What would you buy if you were looking for a steel with a big "fat" sound with and an easy pedal/lever action. Infinity would be ruled out as they are no longer taking orders (which is sad). Thanks guy's.

If I was fixing to buy a new steel, presently being built it would be a. Mullen G2.

Mullen or Rittenberry. The best and easiest playing steels
I've ever owned, and I've had lots and played many others.

Wow! Bob, right there are two ways to fulfill that "all-wood" dream. Amazing that the Williams S10 weighs only 25 pounds!

As for the ZB, is that historical or current? The audio sample was sweet, sweet, sweet!

The ZB is a beautiful modern reproduction made by forumite Kevin Hatton.. Pretty authentic except he uses a lighter, more practical modern pull system.. His pickups are 3 way I believe and seem to sound very close to the original ZB units on the samples I have heard.. I was very close to ordering one, but really can't justify the outlay for a new steel at almost 61, and not as musically active as I was at one time...

To be fair, many new "all wood" steels sound modern to my ears.. The ZB reproduction Kevin builds are an exception being the most " classic" sounding to my ears, as well as the Shot Jackson Classics which sound like an old Sho Bud Permanent.. Just a beautiful sound from those Jackson guitars .. However the copedents are limited on some models, and the guitars are very pricey... bob

For me, it would probably be another Jackson-I love my Jackson Blackjack Custom-it's got great tone, sound, playability, and pedal action. It gives me the sound I've been looking for for fifteen years.

It looks like you already own a Mullen G2. Didn't that sell you on them?

My first choice would be and will be later, a D-10 JUSTICE with the black mica and either yellow or purple diamond mica on part of the split front apron. Following that will be a MULLEN G2, color undecided right now. Probably either black or red mica on a D-10.

Roger, I have owned two Mullen G2 guitars and they are great instruments. I am just curious to know what other musicians, such as yourself would prefer to play. I appreciate all of the honest replies and thank you for yours as well.

Rittenberry only if I didn't have a Bud.

I have a Pro Lite on order...I used to own the S10 3&4 and the pedal action was so good and the tone was great also. I played on the Pro Lite this weekend in Phoenix and really liked it a lot...so my name is on the list for delivery maybe first of summer.
