I'm thinking of changing the latches on my steel case by removing the surface mounted latches and installing the recessed twist locks like you'd find on an ATA flight case. Has anyone else done this before and where can I get the recessed latches? The reason I want to change is UPS has almost torn off the latches on this case anyway and I have to fly my guitar to several upcoming shows. I think it will be more secure if I change them out.

Most of the large mail order music stores have the surface mount latches. Here in Mpls. a couple of the larger music stores also carry them in stock.
I have not installed them on a steel case but have built several 'road' cases over the years using them. They have always worked well in my application.

Gaylon,
Will you have enough room to install this type of latch?(thickness of case front)

Bill,
That's a good question. That's why I'd like to find somewhere local that carries the locks so I could see it first. However, I do think it'll work. The case I have is one of those thick carpet covered cases. The name eludes me at the moment but I'm sure you know the one I'm talking about.

Gaylon,
Check these out, or go to google and type in case latches, looks like these may work with a backside re-enforcing plate.
