Hi,
Im super excited to finally get into pedal steel. Ive played banjo and guitar for 14 years and I have always wanted to try. I just picked up a BMI S-10. It came with a volume pedal and a case only. I have a couple of questions:
1. Ive read that you need a special tool other than an allen wrench to tune these. Can someone point me in the direction of where I could get the tool?
2. Is there a certain length the bar that you use to press down on the strings have to be?
3. Doe anyone have any experience with online lessons/dvds? And could you point to them?
I really appreciate all the help in advance. Thanks so much! |

If you click on the "Accessories" link at the top of the page, you can find a 7/8 inch tone bar and a tuning wrench.
You can find plenty of free instruction if you search YouTube.com (Mickey Adams and many other folks...). Or, you can buy great instruction material by clicking the "Instruction" link at the top of this screen.
Good luck! |

The tuning wrench for the end plate tuners is a 3/16" hex nut driver. They are available at hardware stores if you need one right away.
Where in California are you located ? There might be someone close who can give you some one on one help. _________________ Bob |

As bob just asked, where are you? If you're within driving distance of Oceanside you should visit Jim Palenscar's shop.
I live in L.A., and I teach, if you're interested in taking lessons. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.

Try Richard Sinkler or Steve French (see memberlist),
or consider Kerry Johnson, CosmicSteelMusic.com. He runs ads in Craigslist offering PSG lessons, etc.
These guys are all in your area. _________________ It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing. |

Regarding what size bar to get, I suggest you look at the links above, pedal steel accessories section, Tom Bradshaw's Pedal Steel Guitar Products. He has a section on tone bars that discusses various options.
A good bar to start with would be the Dunlop Model 920. It's 3 & 1/4 inches long, 7/8 inch diameter, and only costs $28, including the shipping. You could certainly spend more, but you're just starting out. You're going to drop the thing and ding it up, so why start with an expensive bar? _________________ It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing. |
