Jim Palenscar - Steel Guitars of North County

Post by Gary Reed »

I had a problem with the mechanism. The G# wouldn't return all the way (flush) after depressing the B Pedal. It just started doing this out of nowhere. Nothing was stuck in the mechanism.
I tried some ideas with no luck.

I called Jim's store.
Jim asked a few question. Gave some instructions.
I said "what if it doesn't work?"
Jim says, " don't worry about it, it'll work'.
IT WORKED!!!!
Thanks Jim

I had a part failure and rather than contact the maker I called Jim (we have had an email relationship for years but I've never spoken to him---weird days of modern times we live in). While we were on the phone I described the part, he photo'd and sent me a pic, we confirmed it was the right stuff, he sent it and I was back in business in a couple of days.

We also discussed some other steel issues and I just knew that as poor as my communication was, he knew exactly what I was talking about. Helped me to confirm my diagnosis and proceed with a modification that totally works.

Great and rare combination of expertise, empathy, intuition and good-guyness.

There's no better training for taming these beasts than a veterinary degree or two.

Yeah... hat's off to Pali...
Some of you know...and some of you don't... that in Jim's other life, before he grew up and opened up a steel guitar store, he was a successful veterinarian.
So he can not only work on your steel, but he can also give you a good flea-dipping.

To say nothing of spaying and neutering you...

Being a former vet, Jim can "smell the fear" when he starts dissecting my guitar!

As stated quite eloquently, Jim is, indeed, Da Man!

Jim's work is amazing. I took him a guitar that I was really mad at and now, after he spent time actually machining new parts for it, I love it. I don't think there's anyone out there more knowledgeable on the subject of servicing steel guitars. He's a great guy and I'm so happy I made the drive down to Oceanside.
Marlen S10 and, soon, a Zumsteel Encore - maybe sometime in September.

They don't come any better than Jim Palenscar. He recently went above and beyond the call to help me find some pedals for my PP. It seems I bug him on a semi-regular basis these days! He is always so helpful and kind. A credit to the community for sure.
