For some reason, I'm drawing a blank as to where I can find a B flat dim chord on my standard E9th neck. Can I get to it by using my E to F LKL lever? What strings do I use and on what fret? Can I substitue a major chord for it? If so, which one?
Thanks

Bob,
With "F" lever engaged pick strings 8,6 and 5 at the 5'th fret. In certain instances you could substitute a C major triad on strings 6,5 and 4 at the 8'th fret, no pedals. With the F lever at fret 5 other inversions are strings 3,4 and 5 and strings 6,8 and 10. You can also advance or retreat the bar 3 frets and yet another 3 frets and still have among others a Bb demenished. There are several other ways also, but this will get you by for now.

Thank you Bobby (I like your name! Tee hee!) By the way, you didn't say..., if I use your first suggestion on the fifth fret, is that with with both A/B pedals up or down?
Thanks again,

Good advice as always Bobby!
My favorite way to play a diminished chord involves the 9th (D)string and the E to F lever. For a Bbdim: 8th fret...strings 9,8,6, and 5
Like Bobby said, moving a dim chord up or down a minor 3rd will have the same notes...just a different inversion. [This message was edited by Rick Schmidt on 31 March 2004 at 10:48 PM.] |

The F lever only. No pedals. To be sure we're on the same page,,,it's the lever that raises the 4'th and 8'th strings 1/2 tone. To get a dem you lower the 3'rd and 5'th tone of a major triad, 1,3 and 5 of the major scale. Unless you have a pedal or lever that that lowers the 3'rd and 5'th tones 1/2 tone(strings 6 and 5 on E-9) then you skin the cat by lowering strings 6 and 5 with your bar (to fret 5) and engaging the the F lever to bring string 8 (and 4) back up to Bb.

Find an A7 chord and raise the root a half tone = Bb dim

Thank you Bob, I'm feeling a lot better.
As I said, there are several to get the demenished. I just gave you what I think is the simplest and most used method on E-9.

If you have a 'knee' lowering your Bs to Bb, you can get a diminished on strings 10,8,7,6,5,4,3 and 1.
Use your A and B pedals, and your 4th & 8th 'lower, as well as lowering the 5th and 10th. Use this combination at the sixth fret for Bb dim., although moving the pattern up (or down) the neck in 'threes' will give essentially the same chord. Try different 'grips' selected from the above strings to find the inversion you like best.

Roger,
Am I missing something?
Did you not mean to say 7th fret?

No, Carl, you're not missing anything - of COURSE I meant the 7th! What's a half-step between friends?

I personally like those festered 19th's and argumented chords, they really make the piano man mad!!!!
