I'm Shipping a steel to Italy . It has a flight case. Any tips regarding
1. Preferred shippers?
2. Paperwork ?
3. Packing ?
4.insurance ?
Regarding payment, any downside to :
1. PayPal
2. Western union
3. Cashiers Check / money order
4. Customs charges

Thanks to all who respond, I'm trying to not exclude an international buyer, I know they must get frustrated seeing steels for sale, and sellers refusing to ship overseas. I'd like to protect myself and make the transaction smooth for the buyer as well.

Insure for the full value. Customs fees are the responsibility of the purchaser.

I've always used FedEx economy. YMMV.

Steve, Consider shipping airport to airport from your city to the closest international airport in the recipient's city. I have shipped 3 steels to Norway with Air Canada Cargo from London Ontario Intl airport to Oslo Airport. Pack it good, with a styrofoam box and cardboard box.

This turned out to be the cheapest way of shipping than all of the courier companies.

I got insurance for the value and it was very reasonable.

The only inconvenience with this method is that the recipient has to travel to the airport to pick up the steel.

I also shipped a steel to Sweden with Canada Post since the buyer wanted it delivered to his door. It was a bit more money but still cheaper than a courier. So you might also want to look into USPS.

I use Paypal on international orders and have had excellent results.

Packing I would put some sort of solid material with padding between the block and the pickup, Wedging it tight against the strings and the case. The pickup in a steel is at least 8 ounces of magnets and copper wire hanging by its plastic bottom plate. If the steel is in the case upside down and the case drops just a foot or so on a conveyor the momentum of the pickup will tear it out of its attachment assembly. I would turn the case over so the guitar's body is face up and mark it "THIS END UP". I was in a shop the guy was repairing or replacing a pickup in a steel that shipped to Texas by UPS or Fed-X. the pickup was broken into several pieces.

I do a lot of transactions on both sides of the Atlantic and I use PayPal almost exclusively. I have it linked to both my British and American checking/current accounts and I've never had any problems.
As far as shipping is concerned, DHL concentrate entirely on foreign shipping nowadays and are the fastest that I've used so far. The customs declaration is a standard US form for whichever country you ship to. Customs fees are payable by the recipient. If you have a DHL account you can just type the details of your shipment into their website and your computer will print up all the necessary documents, including labels, and you can fix a date for them to pick up at your doorstep. You can even pay for the shipment with your Debit or Credit card.
