Just wondering if anyone has changed the Cube 80XL from closed back to open back? I prefer the sound I get out of my 65 RI Twin Reverb mainly for the open back sound. BUT............even with the split cabs it's still pretty hefty to haul around, the Cube is a good amp and about ½ the weight. I'm thinking the sound would be spread out a little more evenly instead of being more directional (I could be wrong on this) so I'd be very interested in some input about this.

The Roland is designed for closed-back... Open it up and you'll have bass response problems. My suggestion is to try a 4ohm extension cab with open back... Others have tried this with good results.

Thanks Steve, I have on occasion used an open back 8 ohm (that's what the extension speaker jac calls for on my amp)extension speak and do like that. I was just wondering how the amp itself would sound with an open back.

If you look closely at your jack you'll notice it says *maximum* 8ohms... The rig will be louder with a 4ohm speaker, and more of the power will go to the ext speaker.

If that's the case, if I plugged in the speakers from my Twin Reverb (the 2 12's are in a separate cabinet from the power, the original ones that came with it and I believe they are 4 ohm but I'm not sure) the Cube would be more efficient than with the 8 ohm speaker and perhaps sound even better? I wouldn't want to plug them in and blow the amp out if it's not recommended.

George...the best bet is a 4ohm extension speaker. Mine is a Black Widow in an open backed cabinet..luckly mine has the Neo magnet. Stephen knows his stuff and I did as he advised me...the 12" and 15" speakers give a great sound. The Black Widow with it's high sensitivity and crystal clear tone matched with the Cubes 1x12" make a good match...and still loud Very Happy

George, I used a small metal disc but others have used a regular vinyl media CD.

Actually my Cube 80Xl has a small 1/2" to 3/4" opening across the back that pushes a lot of air. I noticed it one day playing my tele.
