What is a good software tool for setting the volume of a mixed audio file to approximately the proper level of a CD track? To get it close to CD standard.

My mastering program, Ozone 5, sets the maximum at 0db.

The free Audacity should allow you to do this.

Jack, I've been using Audacity for this task. I was normalizing with 0dB, but I don't think it is calibrating it to a CD standard. I have to read the manual about this. Thanks for the hint.

The "Red Book" standard does not define the audio level. I've seen commercial audio CD's at different audio volume levels. Although there may be a standard, doing a google search I didn't come up with anything about the audio level.

take a CD track that you like..., convert it to wav..run it in your DAW..LOOK at the levels..get a reference of the DB level in the DAW...use that..

do it backwards... or

I run an old version of Cool Edit 2000 ( love it ) which I believe was bought out by Adobe Audition...

Cool Edit allows the entire screen to be graphed so you can visually see DB levels from any audio file. Then you can take the file in question and raise or lower the DB level till the cows come home....

AND...once you are satisfied with the level, now run it in your mastering program if you have one..( as Jack mentions) see what it is there as well..Now you have your mastering program ref DB level for future tracks...

I use T-Racks for a mastering suite..very interesting and flexible package for us do it at home people...

Thanks for the tips. Good idea. I'll find some track that i'll just make be my "gold standard" for vol and compare it with whatever I am working on. I use T-Racks as well. I have to be careful that I don't over-bake stuff however. : )
