I picked up a very clean small PV amp at a swap meet VERY cheap,,,thought it would make a good at home or practice amp,,,but it has a distorted sound, like over driven,,,or chorus turned all the way up (does not have actual EFTs). Sounds OK at low volume (2-3),,,but up past that gets very "hard rock" like. Maybe speaker,,,caps?????

Which amp? Many of their small amps hack and cough when fed by a hot steel pickup.

Lane is correct. Does not take much effort for a PS pickup to overdrive a small guitar amp, especially if it has only a 6",8", or even a 10" speaker.

Actually this is a studio pro 40 with a 12" speaker,,,and sounds overdriven at a volume above 3-4 with a guitar (piezo PU), lap steel or psg. Sounds acceptably clean below 3 with my lap steel.

Hi Sonny,
What settings are you using?
For a clean tone, I would go with Pre at 0, Post at 10, and Satuaration at 0, then play and bring up the Pre to normal volume.
Pete

And probably use the (attenuated) input #2.

I'd call Mike Brown first.
