Thanks Ernie, you've saved the day - it's been driving me nuts.
I knew it was familiar and as soon as you've said the title I realised I've got a vocal version of the song.
I love Buddy's energetic treatment of it.

It was written by Frank Foster from Cincinnati. Check out the other You Tube videos for Basie under Shiny Stockings. There's a great one with Ella Fitzgerald singing made in Tokyo with the Basie Band in the early 60's.

Forgot to mention that I think Ray Pennnington is also a Cincinnati guy. He and Emmons did at least five or six of the best western swing albums with their Swing Shift Band. This version of Shiny Stockings has an odd intro half verse unlike the Basie arrangements. I believe it's on the last album Emmons did with Pennington. It's completely knocked out in my opinion.

You're right Steve, just delved into my cd's and it's on the "Goin' Out Swingin'" cd.
That's two versions I've got - no wonder I thought it was familiar.

| Steve, you're correct sir, Ray Pennington is a former Cincinnati musician. He worked around town under the name of Ray Starr in the early 60's. BTW I remember playing with you back in the mid to late 70's with Dave Gilligan and Billy O. on drums. Man, you were a great player then,I'd love to hear you now. |
