Steel Guitar on Oahu!

Post by Teresa White »

I posted this previously under steel players and was told I need to post in this section. I was wondering where you would go on Oahu to hear Hawaiian Steel Guitar. I was there in the 70's and 80's and heard Jerry Byrd at the Royal Hawaiian/Sheraton Waikiki Luau. How would you go about finding out who is playing where? Would like to eventually plan a trip for me and Tommy.

One excellent suggestion:

Waikiki Beach Marriott - Moana Terrace (3rd level)

Thursday nights 6:30 to 9:30 PM

Keave Ohana - featuring Alan Akaka on the Hawaiian Steel guitar.

There is parking, and important: have your server validate your parking stub. This will save you big bucks.

Arrive early and get a good seat!

Also: On Wednesday nights 6 to 9 PM

At the Outrigger Reef On the Beach -

Kana Ka Pila Grill

Cyril Pahinui

Cyril has an excellent Hawaiian steel guitar player

Jeff Au Hoy. Highly recommended!

www.hwnsge.5u.com will cover most of it for you, Teresa, but for Oahu/Waikiki Jeff w/Cyril/Peter on Wed. is certainly the best thing going currently. Next best is The Keawe Ohana with Alan Akaka, Gary Aiko, and Mandi Lyman on Thursdays, and the Abrigo Family plays at The Willows but not positive Timi does steel on that gig. Slim pickin's.

Nothing on Oahu I'm aware of, Teresa, very few chances on the others for the general public as well.

I try to stay as far as possible from any tourist-oriented luau. IMHO, they are overpriced, full of phony "pseudo-cultural", misinformative, BS. They do not represent the real Hawaiian culture that I have experienced. Stay away from them - you won't learn anything useful.

We saw Casey Olsen at the Halekalani a month or so ago. I understand he'll be there Friday and Saturday of this week. I heard a rumor that they're bringing back steel groups there. If so, it should be encouraged by our comments to the management.
