These are very nice. Thanks for sharing. The first one really got to me. Listened to it twice and then sent the link to my wife. Sending to my wife was probably a mistake since she'll likely say "why don't you play like that?"  |

Thanks for all the encouragement. I was posting this because i feel i need some pointers to actually turn this into listenable music (tone : too bright??, too many clams on the harmonics???, easy on the grace notes???, Vibrato???etc.) but apparently I'm already perfect...............................not!  
Lets hear some constructive criticism. I'm serious about getting good on this funny little guitar so help me out. I want the playing to be as good as the tone.

Werner, I love your musical choices in both of these. They carry me right along. The melody is prominent and supported by a beautiful array of tones and all are perfectly in tune. Your playing is fluid and expressive, and such a good complement to what the weiss does best as well as what these melodies want.
It's hard to listen critically and feels churlish to offer feedback- I'd rather just enjoy your playing. In addition, it's an open question for me about how much metallic noise is acceptable on the Weiss. It seems to me a stylistic choice on this instrument in that those rich overtones may come with a price in noise. I am enjoying your playing very much as is.
That said, on WestWeiss in particular, I sometimes hear a whistling sound in the background. On both tunes, I hear metallic sounds when you place your bar down that could be not damping soon enough or could be fingerpick noise. This latter is most prominent on the ascending passages where you are not sliding up.
I'll say again I'm enjoying your playing as is and think you have reached deep into the soul of the Weissenborn already. Thank you for posting these songs for us to enjoy. |

Thanks so much for the response. I'm still at that stage where things happen outside of my control, the whistling sound and the metallic sounds. I play with fingerpicks because as much as I love the sound of fingertips picking I can't make it work for me so I'm stuck with them picks. truth be told, that's the biggest adjustment for me, having played guitar without thumb pick or fingerpicks for 35 years. anyway, I'm thrilled that my little tracks are being received so well. I'll keep at it for sure.

Okay, emboldened I move forward, probably way in over my head.
Today I recorded a classic tune by the Who. I have problems with the timing , tried a percussion track to keep it together but ditched it except at the beginning and end.

Neil Young/ Emmylou Harris tune with a little help from my Dano Longhorn bass.
To my ears this sounds a bit shaky, especially the chorus. The tuning is open D with a dropped ( half note) high string. Maybe someone knows how to better arrange this tune and make it work. A little brainstorming in that department would be great, IMO.
Also note to self: Need to tackle something more upbeat next.  |

I've been playing regular guitar for 35 years. I tried lapsteel (dual 8 / single 6) a few times but always gave up due to my inability to play anything besides the simplest of licks. Intonation has always been a huge issue. I own a dobro but again I can't play much beyond the run of the mill stuff and I can't play a tune to save my life. when I came across the weiss last year I wasn't gonna buy it due to my failed attempts at this sort of thing. But my wife encouraged me to buy it anyway since it sounds so great even with modest skills.
What I find is that intonation on the weiss is easier for me because of the low string height and this peculiar quality that if never experienced on any other guitar: it plays more like a fretted insstrument because the strong overtone content helps the player
"lock" onto the pitch. The note becomes one with the harmonics when the bar is in the correct position, you can hear when you're on.
So the third time with steel guitars might be the proverbial charm, but yes, I have some previous baggage regarding slide. Never tried slide on a regular 6 string.

This sounds wonderful. I would say just keep doing what you are doing. In my imagination I could hear another instrument maybe playing the chord voicings in the next position up to emphasize certain parts of the song.
I wish I could play this expressively. Nice!
