I'm thinking of going from 8 string 6th based tuning, lo to hi 6-1-3-5-6-1-3-5 to a 10 string. Looking at maybe Tom Morrells 10 string 13th,,,,or maybe Zane Kings 10 string 6/9. Or maybe leave off the top "5" tone,,,and add 3 more tones on the bottom,,,or maybe top?? Opinions welcome,,,, |

My next build will be a 10 string, and I intend to use Billy Robinson's extended C6. It is just like yours, with a high G, but Billy adds a re-entrant D string on top, whose note is tuned to the D between your highest C and E strings. He also adds an F below the low A, giving you an F Major chord on the bottom. Low to High : F A C E G A C E G D. It winds up being a 13th tuning, but really easy to work into. |

Yeah Don,,,I like Billy's tuning,,,would be an easy add on to get used to,,,,but remember,,,Billy is an expert with slants,,,,and string pulls behind the bar. He could make any tuning work!! |

This is true. I love slants and pulls, so I sometimes lie awake at night trying to picture what new chords, harmonies, runs, and licks might be possible with that added 9th. I'm really hoping to get some time to finish up the double 8 I've been building on for a while, so I can start my 10 string.
I do sometimes think about taking the high G off when I add the D, but I've grown to love all the licks it makes possible.
I like what Carco Clave does with his home made 10 string, too. |
