Bob
To my knowledge most all Fender steel guitars
were comprised of ash wood for the virtue of
characteristic sustaining sound. Many were made from swamp ash which is a dense wood but
from my expierience the ash wood is much more
dense than the swamp ash. I am not certain of how many if any Fender steel guitars were manufactured using alder. I for one have not
heard or played an alder wood steel guitar.

Your presence on this Forum and the questions you ask have given the Forum a fresh new look,It is good to see someone who
asks for information as you do. I for one appreciate your giving your time to ask and learn and help others as well.

Good Luck.

I'm not certain exactly how many varieties of wood that Fender used for their pedal guitars, but my own 1000 was definitely white ash (as opposed to the black, or "swamp" ash many people have mentioned). White ash is slightly heavier and harder than black ash. Alder wood, while close in weight or density to black ash, is very different in elasticity, and has a finer grain as well. I've never seen a pedal steel made from alder, but my gut-feeling is that it would be inferior to ash, maple, or walnut.
