Well Reprise Records I believe was based out in Cali. so it's gotta be JD Maness or Sneeky....or one of them great California steel players from those years doing all the work on those late 60's recordings.

I'd bet that was cut in Nashville; sure sounds like it and it's gotta be Charlie McCoy on harmonica. In a lot of places it sounds like Emmons on steel to me, that's my guess. He played on the country album that Hazelwood produced on Nancy Sinatra here.
(Edited to say that I just looked at my copy and somehow I'd forgotten that this track is actually on the Nancy Sinatra album I referred to, Country, My Way. It's definitely Buddy Emmons on that album, cut in Nashville before he moved to L.A..)

I used to work a lot with a fine guitar player named Billy Bremner. We were doing that song (Lonesome Me) when he quoted the Emmons solo on Telecaster - note for nore and phrase for phrase!
It was new to me and I hadn't heard the original recording at that time. I pretty soon bought myself the album after that.
