The lever actuated a built-in mute (a sponge rubber block, actually) that raised and automatically muted all strings for a ukelele-type sound. It wasn't very popular among most players, although a few used it occasionally. That's a "late" model 1000 built sometime after 1963 when the sunburst finish, cast pedals, narrow (stringmaster-type pickups), and muting device were introduced. Donny. You nailed it. My first pedal steel was a blond 1000 with the "tin" pedals. It didn't have the mute levers. My next steel was a sunburst 2000 with cast pedals and mute lever. Wayne Galey used the mute on his 2000 very effectively. Used it for banjo sounds as well a some piano sounds. Also Chet Atkins styles. I removed mine 'cause it got in my way. |

Dave - I have never seen such a clean looking Fender 1000 as the one up for auction. From the pictures it looks like it has never been touched by human hands. Even the cases are immaculate. If you are thinking about getting into pedal steel, it may not be the best guitar to "grow into", but if you love old Fenders and their unique sound, this would be a dream come true. £500 starting bid seems a little high, but a 1000 in this condition would be a rare find. Shipping cost from the UK and my current financial state prohibit me from bidding, but I would love to own this guitar. Good luck if you bid!

The guitar pictured is in nice shape, but the seller admits it's been "overhauled", and it has probably been refinished, as well. To my knowledge, Fender never offered a one-color red sunburst finish. These (D guitars came with 8 pedals standard, and this one was probably special ordered with 9 to still allow plenty of room for a volume pedal (10 pedals were available). While it's not the most desirable model, it is still probably worth 500 GBP. A similar guitar in nice shape would probably sell for $750-$950 in this country. |

Thanks everyone- I agree it's beautiful, but I don't think I'll go for this one. The chances are it will be closer to $2000 by the end of the auction anyway, and I couild get something more versatile for that money.
Its fascinating that asnyone would want to play banjo sounds on steel!
Cheers
